I think I'm over crunch

Bah! Feed me more crunch!

It is only by testing stuff that we find what works best.

When we have a bunch of new mechanics that we love pasted on top of our old, previously clean rule set, we must ruthlessly re-factor our current (convoluted) rule set into a new, clean, slim set that incorporates the best of the old and new.

This does NOT mean that I want every pile of new rules incorporated into the game. It also does NOT mean that I want a larger set of base rules.

It DOES mean that IMHO, the only way to make the rules better is to add stuff on top, try running with the resulting mess, and then incorporate what works best.

(I'm borrowing from modern programming techniques, which I know slightly better than modern game design techniques, if indeed such things exist. ;))

... so thank Raelor above that we aren't required by law to use their system as-is! It's feedback and persistant communities like this that allow us to leverage each other's experience with different rules in different contexts.

WotC certainly do learn sometimes -- and 3.5e is better than 3.0e as a basis for D&D gaming.

You say they aren't perfect yet. Fine. I say they're getting better, but even if they are not, I'm getting better, and so are the rules that actually make up my game.
