And there is the problem. Stop caring and stop trying to defend 4e by trashing 3e. If you like 4e, great. Play it and have fun. People who play 4e don't need to defend themselves anymore than those who like playing 3.x.

I'd say that the OP is falling into the same trap WotC marketing fell into - promoting the new by trashing the old - something that pissed quite a few of us off, by the way. It doesn't take much to spin it as "3.x did it this way, but I think 4e does it better" rather than "3.x was broken, 4e fixes it" but it makes a pretty big difference.

KotOR's on my mind right now, so I'll just work with that.

I loved KotOR 1. It has a brilliant plotline, and was amazing.

KotOR 2 greatly improved the gameplay, but the plotline wasn't as good.

Still, after playing KotOR 2, I don't enjoy KotOR 1 nearly as much. The interface & character development improvements were just too important.

3e/4e isn't as clear a demarcation as two different versions of a computer game, as each does different things better. But it may be that the improvements you were looking for in 3e were actually mostly accomplished by 4e. In which case, I don't have much good advice for you. :)

I feel your pain original poster. I too have attacked 3e because of the need to defend 4e. That's always the problem with these wars. You stake out your position and you get so used to knee jerk defending yourself that you close your mind to other ideas. I think the same is true on both sides of this argument. I genuinely like 4e but I liked 3e too. Both have their strong points.

People say this often, but I don't remember ever actually seeing it. All I saw were comments by designers justifying WHY they made the changes, as opposed to simply saying here's a change, and then waiting for the that change was just for the sake of change comments.

It was, here's is the problem we saw, here is what we did to fix it.

After 3.5 I guess they felt they really needed to explain why they felt the need to release a new edition, as opposed to just saying they were releasing it.

And then there's those like me who don't enjoy KotOR 1 as much because they feel KotOR 2 was better at everything, ESPECIALLY plotline ;p

Yes. Try not visiting internet forums for a while. If necessary, call your ISP and suspend your aaccount for a month or two. I did this earlier this year and it refreshed my interest in gaming as a whole, as well as Original D&D (a game that various forum communities had all but ruined for me, due to the incessent bashing of other games taking place there).

Of course, WotC was dealing with gamers who had just a few years ago screamed that 3.5 was unneeded changes foisted on gamers solely for money. Maybe they saw the need for a hard sell to a resistant portion of the audience and a show of solidarity with the loud group of gamers who were posting things like "3.x is broken" all over the net already....

Also, it never came off as 3.5 is broken to me. Maybe "we think we had some broken/clunky/unintuitive mechanics that we need to chuck out" and "we think some of this stuff just doesn't work well, and even the changes to 3.x didn't really solve it, but rather exacerbated inherent issues we have with game play (like Vancian magic.)" But not a "3.x sucks and anyone who still likes it is a moron" kind of attack.

Well, you could always do what I did: take a vacation to Mexico for at least a week, far away from computers and dice. Drink some hurricanes and pina coladas. Strum some guitar, and snuggle with your sig-o. Smell the ocean breeze. Feel the sand between your toes.

When you get back, you will find that the silly little game called "dee and dee" just isn't as big of a deal anymore.
