I want some opinions... (gaming topic)

It sounds to me that the new DM has asked the players whether they want to continue or not? If that's the case won't the players sort this out by what they respond to that query with?

Now if he just showed up the first day and said we're changing games and there isn't a choice my reaction might be different.

So you're bowing out of the DM chair and asked a capable GM you thought really enjoyed your campaign and liked the current system to take over. Said DM dared ask the group if they wanted to continue the current game or play something else?

OMG!

If the new DM had said to everyone, "Now that I'm DM, we're going to play X!" then it would be uncool.

The DM saying "I know we're playing X, but I have an idea to Y, what do people want to do?" is very cool.

I'm not real clear on something here. Why did you have to stop running this game? Are you still playing with the group?

If you're not, who cares? If they're having fun, great!

If you are, you might have a little more cause to be upset. But really, it's unrealistic to expect a different gm to just pick up your campaign because you can't run it right now.

Your words say that you're concerned about these guys specifically wanting to try whatever system out, but your posts read more like you feel personally slighted by this. If your primary concern IS for those two players, again- if they are playing a game they're enjoying, then it's all good.

OTOH I can see why you'd be upset about this- but I strongly suspect some level of miscommunication here.

This game was specifically started to play this RPG, it is what everyone signed on for.

I asked him to specifically take over this game, and asked if he was willing to continue it, he agreed too.

He knows why everyone, except for the one guy, is in this game. I didn't ask him to take over in order to push his own personal agenda, I asked him to take over to fulfill my promise to these guys to run this specific RPG for them. The only people showing any interest at this time in his other preferred games is the one guy who decided he doesn't like this RPG, but stays in the game because he likes the "adventure" as well as the other players, and one other guy who dropped out long ago. So 3 of the 4 remaining players are in this group to play this specific RPG because they like it, and the GM in question frequently swore he loves it as well.

So I think it was completely in poor taste to even ask the others if they want to play something else, when he knows darn well why the majority of them are even in the game to begin with.

So he is breaking his promise to me, and totally ignoring why 3 of the 4 others are in this game to begin with.

In that case, then it is not cool.

But did you explain this to him that it was this game for these people not his game?

I'm not really seeing much of a problem. Other players may have signed on to play Game X, sure. But they may have also signed to play Game X with Treebore as GM. It stands to reason that any new GM taking over should offer the choice of continuing or trying something else. If the players, as a group, want to continue on with Game X, then they should speak up about that. But if they go "Oo, a new game? Shiney!" that's cool too.

I do think you have to stop characterizing this other GM's question as pushing an "agenda". You're not trying to start up an edition war at your table, are you?

So help me judge my reaction, am I wrong? Should they be able to do what they are doing? Or am I right in that what they are doing is wrong, completely uncool, and absolute breach of faith?
You are talking about something that people do in their free time... for fun. What the guy did may have been impolite (depending how you interpret his actions), but taking it this seriously and getting this bent out of shape about it is not reasonable. Taking over another person's game mid-stream is a difficult thing to do and offering the players a chance to say "We'd rather not continue the game without Treebore as DM, it just wouldn't be the same." actually seems like a pretty cool thing to do, to be honest.

He is, after all, offering them the choice to continue on with your game, not demanding that the old campaign be dropped in favor of his new game/system. Offering the players options during a transition seems perfectly reasonable. In fact, your choice to hand the game off to someone else without consulting with the rest of the group in advance seems pretty uncool. If the players you are concerned about really want to continue on with the current campaign, nothing is preventing them from saying so. Right?

I don't see the problem.

The game still belongs to you. The players can still enjoy it at some later moment with you or another GM.

This is a temporary setback, and possibly, important bit of intelligence about someone you know. Also, there may be something you are not aware of, which influenced their actions.

Finally, some players prefer certain GMs to run specific games. Maybe you're so good you're not replacable.

Sounds like miscommunication all around but in any case, the following applies -

The Dm gets to run whatever he wants to run. The players get to choose if they want to be in that game or not. Sure when you talked to him he said he would run one game but it seems to me he changed his mind and people do that all the time.

I'd say he's in his right. If you say, "Hey, you DM for a while," and he says, "Let's play a different game" and everybody but you agrees, then you're in the minority and either need to adjust yourself or find a new group.

If he changes the game "out from under the rug," what kind of people do you game with that try and "sneak" a new game in? That's kind of really weird.
