I want to.......Destroy the World!

You don't want to destroy the world, but having the capability to do so gives you a strong bargaining chip, especially if you can convince the do-gooders that you're insane enough to go through with it.

27. To impress Jody Foster.

28. To stop some sicko from impressing Jody Foster.

29. To become "immortal" as the greatest mass murderer in the history of the world.

30. Doing so is the final condition that satisfies your pact with Death.

31. You found a button that says "Don't Push-will destroy the world!" and doggone if you're not as curious as a cat.

32. You're a megalomaniac planning to trigger World War III and destroy the world, then recreate a human settlement underwater. (Karl Stromburg, from The Spy Who Loved Me.)

The BBEG (in this case big bad evil group) in my current 4e Campaign doesn't want to destroy the world or any of that. They just want to make things right so that they can free the primordial (Kronos, primordial of time) that they worship. And to take down a god or two along the way.

I have to say that my favorite reason for trying to destroy the world is a misguided attempt to save it. It's hard to find a better villain than the one who you'd probably be friends with if he hadn't gone down the wrong path.

The best villains have a touch of hero in them. :)

Unbeknownst to the world at large, when this world was created it usurped and supplanted the old world. Thus, the world and thousands or millions of innocents were already destroyed once.

Some few beings survived. The heroes' sponsor/teacher/guide/whatever wants to prevent the same fate from happening to this world.

The BBEG, on the other hand, wants to bring back the old world (perhaps brining back his lost family/lover/etc in the process).

Whoever knows where this comes from gets bonus points. Sadly, the points do nothing - but you can still brag about them! Also, don't cheat and google it!
Feh, just remeber to have high enough social skills to convince Arronax cum Kerghan that his logic is a bit... flawed. ;)

Arcanum, btw. :) Have I told you about my idiot savant half-orc that made his own friends....

34. The world is not actually the real world, but a sham/shell/Hell that the BBEG wants to destroy to "free" everyone. This of course is good when its the Matrix (perhaps, thats a lot of people who don't get to go down the rabbit hole) or bad if the BBEG is wrong (or right but the world beyond isn't any better...)

A bunch of these are falling into the general categories of "to make a better world".

35. It's the ultimate expression of my gambling addiction.

36. To collect the insurance on it.

37. Gotta free the entity imprisoned within it.
