I have to say that my favorite reason for trying to destroy the world is a misguided attempt to save it. It's hard to find a better villain than the one who you'd probably be friends with if he hadn't gone down the wrong path.

That reminds me of Judge Death from the Judge Dredd comics - he sentences everyone in the world to death because without any people there can be no more crime...
