I want to start a blog. What do I do?

Hey dudes. I've decided I'd like to start a blog, focusing mainly on my experiences as an OOP gamer and husband/father. Juggling it all, etc.

But I have no idea how one goes about starting and maintaining a blog.

How should I go about it? Any advice/suggestions appreciated.

Will you be using a blogging service like MSN Spaces, Blogger, or Live Journal?

If so - I really like MSN Spaces.

... that was really advice or a suggestion... more of a musing prompted by the thread.

Good luck! Put a link in your .sig when you have it up and running! :)

Depending on your tech level and time there are a couple of ways to go. By far the easiest are some of the sites Queen_Dopplepopolis mentioned. I've been pretty happy with Live Journal. I use to use Movable Type hosted off a box I ran, but I grew lazy and didn't want to handle the maintenance and when I started back up again I moved to Live Journal. I've been happy so far, though I have only been there for a month or so.

Oh yeah, I'll definitely have to use a service. What's MSN Spaces like? Is that the one you'd recommend? (I'm such a blog virgin :\ )

MSN "myspace" is definitely the free blogsite with the most features. Second is blogger, and last is livejournal, opendiary, etc.

I have a place at blogspot, but if I wasn't already "entrenched" I'd move to myspace in a second.

I've recently switched from Live Journal to MSN Spaces. I find MSN Spaces easy to use from a blogger perspective and fun to use from a reader perspective. Live Journal has a more "community" feel, I think. Which can be good and bad when you're a young college girl. In the end, I just didn't feel that it was easy enough to use. So QueenD and LJ broke up.

I stumbled upon an old friend's blog at the end of July - it was an MSN Spaces account. So - I dinked around with it for a while... fond that it allows for easy modification of the "style," theme, and set up of the blog. Additionally, it has a nifty section for you "photo albums". I use mine to post pictures of my husband and I and our pets... and, once Gen Con rolls around, I'll be doing some live blogging/photo posting during the Con for all the kids back home to enjoy. :-)

My husband uses Blogger/blogspot (and I experimented with it for a while... never caught on). It's also very user friendly, but the photo album option (which I really like b/c I like sharing photos) was not nearly as easy to use as Spaces.

I do second that--I use blogspot and I like it pretty well, but posting any kind of photos really sucks there.
