I was "booed" for even showing the 4e Core books

At first, before 4th edition was released, I was the 4th edition naysayer of my group. I would relay the latest "horrible news" about 4th edition whenever our Scarred Lands group would get together... because I really hated most of what I was reading about the direction WotC was taking with the game.

Was I being unreasonable? Sure, but I've loved D&D for 26 years and 4th edition represented a HUGE shift away from D&D's roots (Vancian magic, core races and classes) and that bothered me.

Luckily my group tried 4th edition a few times (I agreed to give it a fair shot and not disparage the game as we played) and decided that it's a good, tactical boardgame but doesn't have the depth of options and simulationist charm of 3rd edition.

When I skimmed the list of threads after I woke up this morning, I read "booed" as "boned" and at first my reaction was

But then I thought about it, and my reaction became :hmm:

In reference to cperkins' post:

I find "simulationist charm" to be a hilarious statement. I shall go off topic for one moment as to why, and this should give doctorhook a rough idea of what I was talking about.
The last 3.5 group that I was in seemed to be run by someone who loved the "simulationist charm" as well. We were in a Forgotten Realms game in the Chuult. The very first game that I played with them, I had to roll more saving throws for disease, poison, and other things than I had ever rolled in the 6 years before that. Combined.
When I think 3.5 simulationist charm, that's what comes to mind.
For me, 4th edition has a LOT more options than 3.5. I guess it just comes down to our definitions of options. You appear to have a different definition than I do.

There are a few people in my area who hover about whenever D&D is being discussed, looking like they're just dying to enter the conversation and say something. And when they inevitably do, they say something like "4e is hardly even a roleplaying game now! It might as well just be a board game!" And then they say something positive about 3e.

There's also a fair handful of very popular, very enthusiastic 4e gaming groups. The discontent seems to be limited to people who aren't actually in any games.

I'll just note that I own both Synnibarr and 4e. Does this mean I win the thread? :)

I have a copy of Powers & Perils, too (along with an adventure module and the Perilous Lands setting), and it actually seems far more playable than Synnibarr. :)

Well, just because they aren't playing doesn't mean they are wrong and they might actually not like the game, but it would still be an interesting question how many "uneducated" opinions of 3E or 4E exist, and what did lead to their opinions. But EN World is not the best place for such a poll, because most of us are pretty well informed, and possibly even more aware about their preferences then most.

I didn't get into that in my last poll, I was more interested in seeing how people that played the game reacted, or what people that didn't play yet plan to do.

Yep, it's every bit that bad.

And the "example of play" - yeah, insane.

I bought the book for the kickass picture of a raccoon with a bazooka, looking down at his watch. For quite some time, that was my CM avatar.

Aha! Here he is.

I have other examples of Synnibarr's "wonderful" art, too.
