At first, before 4th edition was released, I was the 4th edition naysayer of my group. I would relay the latest "horrible news" about 4th edition whenever our Scarred Lands group would get together... because I really hated most of what I was reading about the direction WotC was taking with the game.
Was I being unreasonable? Sure, but I've loved D&D for 26 years and 4th edition represented a HUGE shift away from D&D's roots (Vancian magic, core races and classes) and that bothered me.
Luckily my group tried 4th edition a few times (I agreed to give it a fair shot and not disparage the game as we played) and decided that it's a good, tactical boardgame but doesn't have the depth of options and simulationist charm of 3rd edition.
