D&D 5E [IC] hafrogman's Hoard of the Dragon Queen

The group stays down the in the creek bed. It's slow going, obviously not meant for foot traffic, but it avoids any of the patrol routes and stays low, shielded by banks and scrub. Even with the clanking of Morgan's armor, the group proceeds without incident.

Scree's reports back are hazy, as is the sky in this area, thick with smoke, but there's clearly a lot of activity around the building.

OOC: The wall around the building is low, no more than three feet or so, decorative not defensive. There are kobolds and cultists in numbers, but a better count will require a closer look and more chance of being seen. You're currently gathered in the ravine in J7

Pointing at the brush inside the temple wall, Jeni says "We should keep moving. We'll be able to hide better there"

OOC: She's refering to the two green spots inside the temple wall in K7

OOC: Sounds like a good idea to me. I really wish Jeni hadn't already had to use Moonbeam against those rats now.

"Seems like a good idea. We need to get a solid idea about their numbers so we can determine how to manage this fight." Morgan replied. "Venn and I will stay at some distance behind you." She glanced at the odd mage as he muttered something about gods and cheese.

The river twists south away from the sanctuary, but curves back north after a moment, leaving you on the east side of the wall, still down in the creek bed.

OOC: Stealth for those going up, please.

Morgan nodded. Hunter was a decent scout, although he wasn't quite as good at keeping a low profile as Carrad, but it would pay dividends to have the man there if the scouting team were discovered.

OOC: I'm assuming the bigger blob of green to the right of "3" in the map is a tree?

Carad directed Scree to land on the tree on the east side of the temple ground, trusting that even if it was spotted, no one would question the presence of an owl at night. From there, he delved into Scree's mind, hoping that from here, he could finally get a good look at what was happening at the temple.

Hunter creeps up the slope, hopping over the wall and taking cover in the bushes on the other side. Overhead, Scree wings his way into a tall tree growing in the church yard. Between the two scouts, they are able to get a clear look at the assortment of forces besieging the temple. A mixed force of cultists and kobolds have gathered around the yard, but as of yet do not seem to have found a way inside. Still it only seems like a matter of time as the building is not intended to be a defensive structure.

OOC: The besieging force is split into three sections.

At the front (north) a masked, robed figure directs two cultists and several kobolds. They appear to have constructed a crude ram from a ceiling beam and are getting it in place to force their way in.

A large force is circling the yard, whooping, leaping and hollering. They appear to be trying to distract or demoralize the defenders and townspeople locked inside the temple. They are accompanied by a pair of large, lethal looking lizards.

A small force is gathered around a back entrance to the temple (south), and appears to be trying to set fire to the structure. They are not having much luck and have only succeeded in creating a large amount of smoke, which would make it easy to sneak up on them and gain access to the temple inside.

While listening to Hunter's account, Carad chipped in whatever else he saw from Scree's eyes, but he spent most of the time deep in thought on how to help those trapped within in the face of the seemingly overwhelming opposition.

After Hunter's sharing, Carad, rather uncharacteristically, spoke up, "I say we wait for the circling force to pass, then we quickly hit the small group at the back. As soon as they're down, one or two of us go in to lead the villagers out. Meanwhile, the rest of us hit the other two forces to distract them as soon as they discover the rescue, in a fighting withdrawal, until the villagers are at least safely hidden in the creek bed and heading back to the keep. We can then link up later along the way." He then looked up at the rest of the team, and added, "I should probably be with the distracting team."
