D&D 5E [IC] Uller's Out of the Abyss

Ezraen, says a short prayer for Evandur and turns to the others.

"Hmm, I don't know much about these things. Shuushar, do you think that the Koa-toa would be able to help us get across the Darklake to Neverlight Grove? Otherwise, going to Gracklstugh and then to Neverlight Grove might work. I only ask that we steer clear of Menzo-menz-Drow city."

Shuushar: "The koa-toa are better equipped than anyone at navigating Darklake. I can guide you as well as any of them. But you'll need a boat because none of you look like you can swim. Boats they have plenty of in Sloobludop. They use them to transport people and trade goods. Whether they will be willing to help a pack of lost drow slaves is another question. They will if you give them good reason."

Eldeth: "Don't you think we better account for that demonic bird thing? We all saw it fall down here and haven't seen it since."

OOC: Sorry if I am hitting you over the head with the clues about the vrock. At the table if I give info to the players I get visual queues via body language if the information registered...I dont like to seemingly say something in passing when it is important...been burned too many times by DMs doing that to me.

OOC: The most we can do it watch out for it. I assumed that the Perception rolls were for clues as to where it went, but nothing was mentioned, so I thought we all missed them. Ezraen does not have Survival, so direct tracking is out for me, but if there are other clues that we can see about which way it went, then we should not go that way.

OOC: aha! Maybe that identifies the misqueue. The perception check was to see if any of the PCs noticed that it never came back. It was not to see if you notice it now. Sometimes I use perception checks to see if you notice useful information about the environment or the situation.

As far as I know, no one has made any attempt to locate the critter or take any precautions against it.

I dont think you have to be trained in survival to look for signs of a creature having passed an area or signs that it might still be nearby.

OOC: I assumed the vrock was just the ticking clock to pressure us out of the cavern. Like, "Yeah, it was briefly unconscious, but who knows how long till it might wake up..." And when we did multiple perception rolls (the darkvision-specific one especially, which IIRC Ezraen rolled pretty well on) and got nothing out of them, that kinda solidified it for me.

But...I still don't really care where it is. Unless it's atracking us, why would we go looking for a fight? Pretty sure everyone in this party has darkvision except me and Bertram, so it shouldn't be able to catch us all off guard.

OOC:
That's fine. Just wanted to make sure we're on the same page.

So it sounds like you are leaning toward making for Sloobludop...I'll need so semblance of order of march and spacing and who is doing what...navigating, scouting, keeping watch for threats in front and behind, keeping watch for hazards and traps, who is carrying the dwarf and anything else you think of and how and when you move out. You can ask some of the NPCs to chip in on these tasks.

OOC: Ezraen would start to assume some kind of leadership role, suggesting Eldeth take the lead with Shuushar to get us to the Kuo-toa settlement. Try to make as much distance as we can for now. We should have our scout keep an eye open for defensible/hidden spots that we can take a long rest.

Surana glances around in the dim light. It's hard to see much of anything. There is a lot of silty mud and gravel here. Eldeth lends you a hand by helping to find signs (otherwise it'd be with disadvantage since it is dim light...I know, it's not perception, but I do think without good lighting, tracking would be harder for someone without darkvision). You easily find a crater of sorts in the muck where the creature struck the ground. There are large clawed feet marks in the mud. Some are deeper than others...as if it tried to leap...then a few tracks leading off onto the drier floor toward the southwest. There is no sign of Ront or Erevan.

Eldeth seems to have resigned Ront to his fate. She glances at the pool "The dark water has claimed him." She looks up at the flashes of demonic light and screams high up in the outpost. "I will avenge him and all those who suffered under their whip. But for now let the vile creatures destroy each other."

OOC: are you ready to move off toward the northeast (following Ezraen's plan)? Follow the demon toward the southwest? Something else?

OOC: I'm fine with Ezraen's plan. Surana will walk with Derendil and Drum. She'll always stay behind, but not far from, Sarith and Buppido.

Afraid I can't help much with scouting/lookout stuff, given my lack of darkvision, but my background (wanderer) has a feature that basically says I can always recall terrain/geography stuff, so hopefully I'll at least notice if we start going in circles or whatnot.
