Iconic Monster Use - The Displacer Beast

Been playing for over 25 years and only ran into one once... Yep, one time, 25+ years, those odds are why I never win the Lottery.

Of course, I've been playing D&D for 30 years, so that's only about once every 2 years. I can probably say the same about owlbears, minotaurs, wyverns, manticores, medusas... There is just such a vast number of "iconic" monsters it doesn't really matter. Use the one that fits the situation or whim at the time.

I voted 13-14 times. It might actually be more. I've been playing since about '83 and get confused sometimes...

Do displacer Serpents count? Because lord knows I've fought enough of those in a recent campaign...

I used a horde of them within B4:The Lost City.

A infusion of alien darkness granted them darkvision and a much more disturbing appearance. They also suffered utter destruction [as disintegrate] if a Light or Lightning spell dropped them to zero or fewer HP. Their behavior was more curious investigative than raw malignant.

I used them once or twice back during the 1980's. I don't recall ever encountering them in a table top game, but I did encounter them in the old Gold Box SSI games.

The reason I'm doing these is to look at what people are talking about when they talk about "stripping" the flavour from iconic monsters when they get remade. Well, if a creature is almost never used, then the flavour doesn't really matter does it?

I dunno, that I don't use monsters doesn't mean I like how they are. It usually means I didn't get to use them so far.

I think I've used displacer beasts twice. Once as a simple random encounter. The other time the PC's fought it in an arena when they needed some money. (It had also been secretly buffed by the arena owner, who, unknown top the PC's, wanted their dwarfen member dead.)
