Ideas on a feat: Mounted cleave

I think that is getting a bit complicated. Plus it is spirited charge that gives you the the bonus multiplier, and I have not put that in the prerequisites anywhere.

Perhaps room for a greater mounted cleave feat that requires spirited charge and a higher bab??

I definitely think the idea merits further thought, I see no reason that we cant make a cleave spirited charge type attack. I think there need to be more higher level feats for fighters. We could make a feat that requires the whole whirlwind attack feat chain but allows you to move because you are mounted. The possibilities are endless, if we simply think what is balanced by the requirements.

I like the idea, but a whirlwind one seems a little too much since one is on horseback.

I agree we need higher level feats and langer feat chains.

Well I am up past my bedtime, so no more tonight, but I will think on it, and tomorrow I will post something for a spirited charge/cleave feat.

One quick question. If a fighter is on a mount, and attacking someone who is on foot on the ground, do you consider the mounted attacker as being on higher ground??

Yes you get a +1 bonus for being mounted and attacking a medium-size creature or smaller. (see PHB pg. 138, Combat while Mounted).

Note, if you are using a lance when charging it makes sense to hit one opponent, but not more than one. If you are using a melee weapon, then you should be able to Cleave with the charge bonus.

I would modify your feat as follows:

Mounted Cleave [General]

You can use the speed of your mount to close in on additional opponents.

Prequisites: Str 13+, BAB 8+, Cleave, Mounted Combat, Power Attack, Ride by Attack.
Benefit: When using the Ride-By feat, if you drop (typically by dropping it to below 0 hit points, killing it, etc) the target of your Ride-By attack you gain an additional attack against another target along the line of your charge. You must be using a non-lance melee weapon to take advatage of this feat. You do provoke an attack of opportunity from your second target.
The extra attack is with the same weapon and at the same bonus as the attack that dropped the first creature. You can use this ability once per round. Note: All movement of the charge must be in a straight line as per the normal charge rules.

In my mind this simulates the calvary charging through a bunch of mooks and hacking them with his sword as he rides past. I don't think that you need the 10 foot movement restriction. Also, you could create a similar feat based upon Spring Attack and Fly-By attack.

WaterRabbit posted.
"You must be using a non-lance melee weapon to take advatage of this feat."

Could we change that to, You must be using a melee weapon that does not have reach. This would avoid someone using a polearm, or long spear, or the like. Or are we specifically targeting the lance?

I think he's specifically targeting Lance because lances traditional got dropped after they impaled someone. Hard to remove that Gaul of the end of you lance when you're on horseback. Lances also hada habit of breaking.

"Also, you could create a similar feat based upon Spring Attack and Fly-By attack."

There already is a feat like Spring Attack and Flyby attack for horseman, it's called Ride by attack. It's a pre requisite to the feat in question, I imagine you just missed that. :D

Ahh that makes sense, ok I was thinking we were targeting the lance because of it being a reach weapon thus allowing a huge range of open targets when coupled with a 10 foot move.

Do we have objections to it being used with a weapon that has reach? I think it would be easily to redirect an iterive attack if you had a melee non-reach weapon, but I have no experience in mounted combat.

I know what you are thinking, no experience in mounted combat where does this guy come from, but alas it is true, I have never cleaved into anyone while on horeback.

Anyone have thoughts on if it should be reach weapons or non reach weapons?
