Just FYI, here's the 3.5 marshal's suggestion.
Cha > Con > Int.
Though, they also attacked, so... Str/Dex as well.

Marshals have the following game statistics.

Abilities: Charisma is especially important for marshals because it improves their standing with those they lead, as well as permitting them to magnify the efforts of the group. Constitution is important for a marshal's staying power. Intelligence is important for the many skills required by marshals to complete their commissions.

This poll is just one more datapoint in the "People can't even agree on what the Warlord is" debate. Is it an Intelligent warrior? A Wis warrior? A charismatic warrior? It's not going to be two or three of those, just one. We're not going to get subclasses that key off of different stats. But, people have fundamental differences in how they perceive the Warlord even down to this level.

Which once again proves no matter what WOTC goes with, some meaningful portion of Warlord fans will be disappointed.

Intelligence, Constitution.

This is about saves, not talent. Even if there are charismatic warlords, I don't expect them to have high saves against charisma effects. I do expect a warlord to see through illusions and other mental (magical and mundane) tricks. I might swap Constitution ⇒ Wisdom, on that basis. Yeah, it would be counter to Charm Person and Suggestion and similar things. Constitution saves have some things it works for that mesh with the class, but isn't quite as solid a "must have" save.

OK, Intelligence, Wisdom.

I voted for str wis. I would be willing to change str out for int. I feel the warlord is generally more-strong willed than anything and wisdom in the saving through regard emulates that even better than charisma.

I don't think anyone picks him out as wise, it's more that wisdom is strong-willed, and perceiving the battlefield is the first step in being able to inspire allies or deploy tactics to help out in the combat. I picked it partially as a catch-all for int and cha.

I could live live with either INT or WIS - I think the choices here more so demonstrates the problems associated with the weak save/strong save dilemma. INT and CHA makes the most archetype sense but doesnt make 5e save sense.

How about giving them a choice?

Saves: Con, and your choice of Int or Cha.

Possibly a feature somewhere that gives you the other one.

Can't you see Charismatic instead of Intelligent Warlord's just as easily?

Sure. Actually, all Warlords are going to necessarily use both at least a bit. Something like inspiring word is vital, and conceptually involves CHA, similarly, tactics conceptually involve INT, and situational awareness WIS.

There's only one example of the Warlord in the game's history, there is no debate on what it is. Only how it might finally be implemented is up in the air - and will remain there until an official 5e Warlord class sees print.
