Pathfinder 1E If Paizo bought Greyhawk could they make their money back?

It depends on how badly you want to publish Greyhawk, Eric. ;) IF you desire it badly enough, you will be able to publish a Greyhawk line.

Erik did say, "We've raised the issue before, and it's always been a non-starter." Sounds rather final to me.

Isn't that the business way of saying politely, "We were told to go play somewhere else. Preferably in traffic."?

GH is problematic because of its fanbase. You've got the purists who only accept anything by EGG, and sadly those seem to be the loudest portion. So, whatever you decide to publish for GH, you've guaranteed a lot of bad press from the get-go on the internet :\

More proof? Look at the setting leading this poll over at Paizo...

Not '"doing well against the well supported giants"... LEADING.What? You say you need hard business proof? The editor-in-chief of both Dragon mag and Dungeon has said flat-out (and I quote) "Whenever we publish Greyhawk, it sells". Hard to argue with that.

I think those results are immensely biased. Greyhawk people "must" purchase dungeon already because it's been the only source of Greyhawk material and exclusively supported GH for a while. Having Erik Mona there drew in any holdouts of Greyhawkers too.

It's like asking people at a Living Greyhawk convention what world they play in.

:) Yea, sort of...there is some business case that rules out handing it over to Paizo. I suspect it's to do with completing with Eberron and FR.

That said, if they did do a hard cover GH campaign setting, I'd buy it. I prefer homebrew, then FR, then GH, then the others. In all cases I use bits and pieces from all in my homebrew. I have Blackmoor, I'd buy Greyhawk.

Speaking of 'others', anybody know if the mars game is out yet?

Edit: I'll answer my own question: the Mars game is out next week...found the status over in the OGL section.

Thanks,
Rich

I'm a fan of the Greyhawk boxed set of 1983... it's probably the best boxed setting I've seen. I'd accept non-EGG material... but the whole "Greyhawk Wars" thing sucked so bad that it's probably a moot point.

Actually I think it is more of a:

"How many Zeros do you think we'll have to put on this check?"

"Ummm, how many did you just say?"

"Well, then on the next item of business".

If Paizo put up enough Cash Hasbro/WoTC would give them Greyhawk. It seems that the amount required to even begin discussions is way to high to expect a return on the investment. (Or WoTC insists on some pretty wierd strings that would hamstring it from the get-go).

I can't really see any reason why Wizards would want to hang onto it. It's not like they've made any money off of it since when?
They haven't even made money off TSR's other acquired assets that even TSR have discontinued, from Alternity to Boot Hill.

If you know anything about Acquiring Wealth, the principle can work on anything since the Laws governing the Acquisition of Wealth govern the Acquisition of anything (i.e. the Law of Cause and Effect).

Although your powerful desire or feeling for something can affect someone else. If Wizards of the Coast's desire to hold on to the IP of Greyhawk is more powerful then Erik's wish to claim it, then its WotC's desire that will be honored by the Universe.

Newton's third law of Motion applies: "For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction." The question needs to be asked: why would you want Erik to publish Greyhawk materials when there is a wealth of GH materials at the click of a download at RPGnow and DriveThrough?
