... what the heck is RPG? What would be your answer? How to explain in few short words?

Please help...

My standard reply starts with "RPGs are a participative, collaborative, extemporary storytelling pastime". But I usually find I have to go on from their to explain. And I guess I'd better warn you that not all roleplayers agree entirely.

Trying to explain character creation to someone, on the other hand, is a whole mess of worms.

That's why so many systems have templates. It's also why there are 'starting packages' in the PHB

It is always better to start pithy and get people to ask for explanations, rather than boring them straight out.

Sometimes I walk around with one of those anti DVD-CCA T-shirts. I get asked about it a lot, my response is usually a one-liner, and it turns into a five-minute discussion/explanation.

Out of about fifty or sixty people asking, only one person said he didn't care.

Most people are more understanding when they get information related to their own point of view, and don't have to go any further then they want to.
