If WotC decided to revitalize and support AD&D, would you play/buy it?

Would you support and/or play an new WotC AD&D?

I still am playing it, after a fashion; so I wouldn't have to move much there. :)

I'd almost certainly pick up at least the initial release (core 3) plus every adventure they put out, mostly to see what they'd done with the rule system and to give myself new adventures to run my current game in.

And yes, officialness matters - even though it really shouldn't. :)

I played a lot of 1e, and I loved it then. But I've pretty much felt like every edition has been an improvement
same here, except for 4e.
"officialness" does matter to me. It generally means better art, editing and playtesting and makes it easier to find players.
but it's not enough to make me want to play, much less buy, a version that isn't an improvement to me.

New material for the 2e settings -not by the 4e design team, but by members of the various original 2e setting design teams- would get me to give WotC some of my $. I might not use the AD&D ruleset - probably would retrofit it to 3.P on the fly, but there's a certain feeling the old ruleset evokes that I like, even if I got into D&D after 3e was out.

For game-reference utility, OSRIC is plenty vital in the hands of hobbyists.

The classic texts, though, are literary artifacts. Gygax's authorial voice was as much a part of the historical phenomenon as was Tolkien's in his tales of Middle Earth.

Periodic "collector's edition" reprints might be profitable (at what interval I don't know). I would be interested in an annotated edition, were there sufficient scholarship. Online discussions of the Dungeon Masters Guide get Talmudic enough to warrant a book that looks the part!

First, though, I hope WotC will bring back PDFs. I would prefer better quality ones, but even a return of the old scans would be nice.

I didn't vote in the poll. I'd definitely look through the books, and maybe buy them. It would depend on how much was AD&D and how much of later editions crept in in these hypothetical expansions.

It might be possible to make a "New AD&D" that would appeal to me. Clean up the mechanics like in 3E, but without all the added complexity.

But going back to rolling d12 for turning undead? (And every other case-by-case rile AD&D had so many of). Not going to happen.

I'd have to say no, as I never got rid of my old books in the first place.

Unless they did an entirely new layout & pictures, that is - then I'd likely buy it for that. Or if they came out with new adventures.

However, in all honestly, I am very unlikely to play anything pre-3E.
