In fact I don't play d20, I use the books like I use the GURPS books- ideas to mine and convert to Alternity.

Though for one-shots I would prefer FUDGE (maybe the Collectors or Pariah).

Tough choice... but definitely other (tho, some of the listed ones are pretty good, of course, especially HERO and Storyteller)!

Chaosium's Call of Cthulhu, by far my favorite roleplaying game.

I've played almost all those systems, but aside from D20, Rolemaster/MERP has always been my game of choice. Some may be intimidated by the charts, but to be honest I personally have found the system easy & simple to use, wonderfully adaptive, and deadly enough to make my players actually think about their descisions.

My 2nd choices would be a toss up between Harnmaster and Ars Magica. Both require alot of thought and have wonderfully creative magic systems.

I'll second that.

Traveller... The only game system in which your character can die during creation before you ever get a chance to play him.

You can't even do that in Paranoia.
