If you join a group with 4 players alread?

A party of 4 1st lvl with a fight,Rog,Wiz and Cl, what would you play as the 5th pc?

I chose Bard for no reason related to game/party balance or diversity. I just haven't had a chance to play a bard in 3/.5 e yet and would jump at any chance to do so. :) Odds are if I were the first player recruited for the game, I'd still choose a bard.

I'd go for a support character. Bard would be my top choice. But possibly a 'no evocation' wizard or a buffing/healing/non melee cleric - the cloistered version if available.

Partly because these would fit with the 4 characters. Mainly because from the first post it seems the player is new to the party. Any of those are unlikely to cause friction or tread on too many toes. Not met a player yet who gets mad about being buffed/healed?

Most guys voted for bard or ranger... due to the mentioned reasons. Druid as well.

All three of these classes can make great archers (PBS, Precise Shot, Rapid Shot, do you really need more?).

I guess I would give the kobold paladin on riding lizard a try though :D

I voted barbarian as it gives a useful plus to the combat tank side of things and with the mobility of the barbarian it can be tactically useful.

Second choice would be a bard, inspire courage can be useful for low level combats as a +1 is useful when your bab is 0 or +1

A second cleric, or possibly a druid. Particularly at low levels (i.e. when you can't afford lots of potions), if the primary cleric goes down, you're in big trouble if you don't have a back-up. Having two clerics avoids the possibility of having no healing whatsoever, and having no way to remedy that.

Of course, bards can do that later, but clerics are generally regarded as a stronger class than the bard in any case.

It was a close call between the bard and the ranger. On the one hand the bard can buff and inspire the entire party, but for me thats about as exciting as a cleric who just does the healing.

So I picked ranger. Good offensive capabilities and the ability to track.
