5th lvl party with the core classes already covered? Monk....
I've seen this combo used VERY well in the game I'm running with the rogue setting up flanks for/with the fighter, the monk tieing up the parties open flank, the cleric buffing and healing whoever he can reach, and the wizard keeping their foes heads down.

This is how I'm playing a monk in our current campaign. He's great for getting to those spell casters that think they're safe 40 feet behind their henchmen too.

The party is Ranger, Cleric, Wizard, Barb/F. Berserker and Monk so he's also the designated opener of anything that might be trapped. Good saving throws, can't be poisoned, etc.

Yeah that's my fighter's job.... 113 Hit Points, a Cloak of Resistence +4 and an Adamantine Fullblade... when he cracks a safe... he really cracks a safe.. which is good 'cause we dont have a rogue so it always boils down to ...

"Gara go bust open that chest... we'll be standing as far away as we can." :\

anything but rogue.

paladin only if the DM has a well stated, non modern morality for the game world.

Fighter, if finding magic treasure is not rare, monk if it is.

Cleric of opposing deity to party cleric if the roleplaying is good. if role playing sux, then barbarian all the way and hack my way to the throne.

The party already has a cleric, a fighter, a rogue and a wizard? Always go for a bard. You have that small bit of healing that you need to patch up the cleric when he goes down. You have the buffing abilities to make the fighter and rogue better in combat. You have information gathering and social skills so you can back up (if not surpass) the rogue and the wizard. Your spell-casting abilities back up the cleric and the wizard. You can lend a useful hand in combat, albeit from behind, because you have that 3/4ths BAB and a good Dexterity score; focus upon ranged combat. As a bard, you are the best choice for a party member after the four fundamental positions are filled because you make all of them perform better.

I choose bard, because I haven't played one for a long time, and bards are so very, very cool. And I get an excuse to sing at the table. Not that I really need one.

Not really surprised by the results of this poll. I chose the Ranger, but I was leaning toward the Bard as well. The simple fact is that I'm not terribly good at roleplaying Bards as PCs. Obviously, they're the best support class for such a group, but the Ranger, if focusing on ranged attacks, could be an excellent counterpart to the group's Fighter. Of course, if the Fighter is a focusing on ranged attacks, then the Ranger should take the two-weapon fighting path. Either way, you've got a bit of extra firepower on your team and the touch of nature that the group might otherwise lack.
