I'll never live long enough to experience all of 4e

I was going through the Character Builder with a friend and having a look through options I don't generally have much interest in and discovered two things:

1) After looking through these options, I find a lot of them more interesting than I thought I would.

2) Even if I played 4e every week for the rest of my life, with just the current amount of content available, I'd probably never be able to experience every character build.

This impressed me. In just one year WotC have managed to pump out so much content that I now have a billion gazillion options at my fingertips for the price of a subscription that I can expire at any time and still have more content than I'll ever need.

You gotta give credit where credit is due, I believe, and I think the slaves over at WotC deserve some recognition for the sheer volume of work they've done on this edition... and yet there's still tons coming out every month!

Fanboi or no, you have to admit that's a pretty impressive effort.

Par for the course, really. Every edition of D&D as far as I can tell has always had many, many more interesting ideas and options than time to fit such things into.

In fact, so much so that many of them are still going some 30 years on. :)

It's one of the weird paradoxes of this little niche that the interesting stuff almost always outshines the amount of time you're going to spend doing it. It's a little sad, but until D&D is playable in 1-hour increments from anywhere in the world on whim...that's the way it is. ;)

Wow. Five replies and four of them are snark.

And we wonder why threads like these degenerate into pointless editions wars?

To the OP: I also love the hundreds of concepts that a glance through the character builder gives me. I want to play a human summoner-wizard, a goliath barbarian, a deva invoker, a warforged artificer, a shadar-kai avenger, a drow dark-pact warlock a dragonborn tempest-fighter, etc, etc.

I just wish I could play (and not DM) once in a while...

Come on DDI game table! *Still crossing my fingers*
Maptools, man. Maptools. It's just the DDI game table, done by a 3rd party.

But I feel your pain. I'd enjoy just playing... a cleric. Or a rogue. Or a bard. I don't need anything overly fancy or exotic at this point.
