Illithid army ?

Greetings,

i was wondering of having my mind flayer villains raise an army of their own and try to conquer thw surface world. However, i wasn't too sure what would fit into the criteria. i was thinkin of a monster race that was too dumb or too easily susceptible to the mind control of the mind flayers as a whole...kinda the the zerg's relationship with their cerebrates from starcraft. so far i've only thought of grimlocks as the main infantry and umber hulks as the big boys...menancing...

any other ideas of races that would obey their mind flayer masters in the mass ???

My illithids attempted to raise an elemental army - susceptible to mind control so you can be sure of their behaviour, not susceptible to stunning so no worries about friendly fire - mind blast away into combat.

As an army it takes some beating. Fortunately for my campaign world the party managed to close the "door in the air" by crashing a cloud giants castle into it just before the invading armies from the elemental plane of air arrived.

They'd have made it too if it weren't for those meddling kids!

Oh I think opretty much anything could be dominated. You also could play around and make some new creatures. Say the illithids have been tampering with fleshcrafting and have created some pretty wild abberations.

Hal-Illithid (in Fiend Folio) is a kind of slave race.

Umber Hulks are often used by illithids if I recall (or what that just in Baldur's Gate II?). Anyway, the neogi (MMII) used Umber Hulks as a slave labor force, and the illithid have dealings with the neogi, so you could have them. Also as I recall, fomorian giants live underground, they're dumb and strong, so they could be used.

orcs are good with their weak will. Their leaders could easily be dominated into leading rampages onto the surface world, perhaps even as a softening up or diversionary action not directly traceable to the illithids. After all everybody expects the orcs to go on the warpath en masse all the time.
