I'm blind!!! Blind PCs, what to do.

There's no real point in giving special bonuses for being blind, because as soon as he can find a cleric who can cast Cure Blindness he'll be able to see and have the special bonuses.

Maybe it's a special blindness. Like the sort that comes from pissing off an artifact. ;)

but seriously, I have to give him something they're gonna be on boats :D

But yeah, these are all good ideas.

A bunch of ranks in listen should do nicely

Model the PC after 'Daredevil' with plenty of ranks in listen, balance and, as above, Alertness and Improved hearing. I would treat his senses as if sound and sight were swapped of course As far as range, I would allow him to hear where opponents are within 30', and if within 5' he can strike them without penalties. I think his biggest threat would be ranged attackers, but with his movement he could track them down quickly...

Ever seen the anime flick Ninja Scroll? You'll know which baddie I'm thinking of.

Do all engineers have bad grammar?

I'm going to argue with myself for a moment or two.

I don't know. Blindsight does seem like a pretty big bonus.
Now, while I'm not saying that you should make his character harder to play, or give the guy a hard time. But if you do give him supernatural abilities, it's become more than just learning to compensate for being blind.

At higher levels, sure, let him take a little bit of blindsight as a feat if he wants. That can represent his continued growth.

Am I crazy? I mean, a blind PC? Do you know all the problems that that's going to give? He can't read, can't walk down a hall, it's madness! You've got to make it so he has some method of compensation, other wise he just sucks!

But if you take away the suck, then what are you left with? A little bit of a gimmik.

Definately blind fighting.

Hah. Then I looked at the rules. I still think blindsight's a bit much, but anything I can think of has other consiquences (like a 50% reduction in cover bonuses for his opponents). So, uh, yeah, looks good, and you can ignore my rambling now.

I'm gonna go hide in a corner shamefully now. ;)

I referred to the Blindsight 5' radius feat in S&F. It's prerequisite is Blind-fight, and a 19+ wisdom. With 5' blindsight, he can melee with no penalty, and he won't trip and stumble over stairs and such. So at first level, he'd spend two feats to compensate for his natural blindness.

I wouldn't advocate giving him much of a bonus besides a plus to listen checks and possibly access to the scent feat. I'd probably let him keep his full speed despite being blind. I'd also allow the "keep Dex bonus" portion of Blind-fight to apply to ranged attacks.

So no major bonuses, and he'll have penalties to his physical abilities. If he wants more, he'll need to take a PrC. My 2 cents, anyways.

How about this feat?

Improved Blindsight

Prerequisite: Blindsight 5' Radius.

Each time this feat is selected your blindsight radius increases by 5'.

Actualy, I've been playing a blind paladin for a while now, and he has Blindsight 30' (Traded Lay on Hands and disease immunity for it)... And guess what? It's still hard as hell.

Here are some of the limitations:

It's worthless beyond 30'. Totaly. That means if an enemy is 31' away, you don't know he exists. That's really bad in combat.

You can't read, or determine colour, or level of light...

If your walking down a long hallway, you have no idea whats down at the end... Just whats around you for 30'.

My character still needs a lot of help from the rest of the party to make it through the day.

*edit*

I designed a class a long time ago called "Champion of the Unseeing Eye" for monk-types, that's all about being blind... I could post it... But it's fairly well mystical, and might not be what your looking for.
