That's what most people do. Sometimes a really old thread is resurrected and you see all those familiar names that have long since disappeared from the boards. Apparently most didn't need to write "I'm taking my ball and going home" threads.

If you came to D&D, learned from D&D, but then moved on to something different, your experiences still shed light on the game, and you still belong at EN World. If you're at the stage where you're moving from "learning from D&D" to "moving on to something different" the discussion of that choice, and why you're making that choice, is completely relevant to the discussion of d20 games.

No, I really think True20 or C&C can help you with your problems. Over on another board someone said that it helped them quit smoking.

You should give it a try.

According to most C&C fans, it will cure cancer, pay off your debts, and even give you reach-around.

Yes, there's a remote possibility of intelligent discussion in each case, but somehow I don't see it as welcome.

But in the threads about dropping out of D&D, there is a lot of intelligent discussion about other options and ways to go about it. From that I think it's clear to say that the discussion is welcome. If it wasn't, there wouldn't be anything in the threads besides "Well, uh, OK. That's nice. Go home." But there's lots of smart discussion in those threads.

There's another point too - I can say: "Hey, I'm not playing D&D anymore - can you suggest another game?" or "Hey, I'm not playing D&D anymore, want to come play in my Castles & Crusades / Risus / GURPS campaign? It's going to be about an elven nation that's starting to fall apart, like the Roman empire in its last days. The players will start as at the edges of this empire a community bordering on the barbarian wilderness."

Are these off-topic of EN World's general discussion forum? No way.

"Man, my last session sucked, and I'm starting to think D&D just isn't the system for us." is just another shade of the same clean, civil, on-topic discussion about the D&D-related games we run.

If you got all this from a recent I'm done thread, good for you. I just see D&D bashing with no real basis for a good discussion. Take a look:

Well, I'm done with D&D 3.5. I'm going to take a step back from the rules bloat, the awkward mechanics (AOO anyone?), the endless prestige classes, feats, spells, player options, DM options, and the book treadmill that has become the current version of D&D. I need a simpler system. I'm pulled the old boxed sets out and re-read the basic and expert rules. I was delighted to read through something that no longer gave me the "gamer headache". It's so much easier to digest than the out of control monster 3.5 has become. Maybe I'll check out C&C and see how that goes.

ENWorld is tolerant like that. As a D&D 3E board we embrace D&D 3E bashing.

Some boards dedicated for certain games actually ban that. Small game A's boards actually had more content in the bash D&D section of the boards than in the sections for constructive stuff for game A. So I guess it happens everywhere. So they banned it.

As it is, our mods prefer to err on the side of inclusion in terms of what kind of discussions we're allowed to have - and what kind of opinions we're allowed to express about D&D. As I've said above, I think that if we banned non-D&D discussion, or discussion about what we don't like in D&D, then we'd lose a lot of members.

If you don't like the rules of EN World as a community, you have a few options: If you want to discuss a change in the forum rules, there's room for that in meta. If you think a particular post was breaks the rules, report it to the mods. But if these options aren't doing it for you - and you don't want to tolerate discussions that others want to participate in, and that the mods do tolerate - maybe EN World isn't for you.

Yeah I gathered that :) I guess I see it as a kind of a canary in the coal mine thing. I don't necessarily participate in a thread like that or even read it (I'll often skim, but thats with most threads) but you could see it as part of a feedback loop. Probably a lot depends on the tone of the poster, frankly I can relate to a lot of what i read in some of those threads recently.

Naah, I'm not done with ENWorld yet. But when I am, I'm sure to leave behind a couple of "I'm done with.." threads  :p

That's funny, because all I see coming from you is "heretic" bashing.

Take a look:

I just think it's a bit juvenile nowadays to make a public declaration about it...
...there are bigger problems to deal with than annoying someone with a thread on a geekboard...
Sorry if I annoyed you btw.
Or you could grow a pair...

I made a thread where I asked people why they left D&D. Did you think it was going to be full of glowing reviews of the game they left? Of course it's negative. People are replying with the reasons they left, just as I asked them to. What I don't care for are all the people posting in that thread (and a few others like it) basically telling them that they are just wrong, or that they shouldn't be posting because this is a "D&D/d20 Board".

If you like D&D, great! Awesome for you! And my advice is to not click on posts called "What I think is wrong with D&D" if you can't stand to hear something negative about it.
