I am making a Witch class for D&D 5e.

I felt if they have Warlocks, why not Witches?

So, I decided my endeavor and began working on the class sometime last week.

If you want me to post some previews of the class, let me know!

By all means share, that's what ENWorld is all about. :) I do recommend including a one-paragraph design synopsis explaining what the intent is, how your witch class is different than other classes, etc. Could help tighten your own design as well as make it clear for folks critiquing it.

Brian's witch class is very cool. We've used it a bit, particularly his rewrite of bestow curse. Good stuff.

I do not want to read anything, as I do not want to sub-consciously (or even consciously) draw influence from somebody else's work. Unless of course these are just threads talking about what people believe a witch should be. But even then, they can bring their ideas to this thread if they wish, instead of me poaching from threads.

I shall do that. Instead of just showing stat blocks, describing what I see a witch as would help my design, and hopefully help you (as in everyone reading, not just you, Quickleaf :p) understand my design.

I have a mess of things to do, then I shall get working on this.

P.S.

I don't have InDesign because I can not afford it. I use Apache Open Office instead, which I heard is comparable. Hopefully my design work is decent enough. One day I would like to try InDesign to see how intuitive it is, and to see how well it works.

Before I know whether I want to see it, I would need to know why you think it should exist.

If it's just for the sake of having different mechanics for a character concept that could easily be done with the wizard, then I couldn't possibly care less. If your vision of a witch is one which doesn't fit under any existing class concept, so you need new mechanics to represent that, then I might be interested. If you think the warlock is a dumb class with too many moving parts that don't work well within the rest of the system, so you want a variant class to fit that character concept closer to the standard wizard mechanics, then I would definitely be somewhat interested.

To echo what others have said: Why do you think we need a Witch class, other than semantics. Why is a Warlock/Sorcerer/Druid/Bard/Wizard, etc. with the serial numbers filed off (i.e. just changing the name of the class) not good enough? If you have interesting answers to these questions (even if it is only trying to replicate a certain setting's magic/characters), and some decent design goals, I might be interested. Otherwise, not so much.

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you. I was participating in the Iron DM tournament and needed to work on my submission.

Now, people ask a question, why have a Witch?

An answer to this question can be simple or complex depending on the recipient and what they are looking to get out of it.

  • Semantics - some may prefer a name available, though I feel anything worth just a name change isn't worth a print.
  • Mechanical Difference - some people may want rules/mechanics to be different than any other class, or at least different than any other magic class.
  • Flavor Difference - some people want to experience a different flavor that perhaps they can not get by multi-classing or even playing one class.
  • Other - or perhaps they have other reasons for a Witch class interest.

[sblock] My definition of a Witch is somebody who sacrificed something for their power to a higher being. Unlike the Warlock, the Witch gives something up to acquire her power, the most common conception throughout history for folklore is the soul, but the Witch has other options as well.

A Witch is also someone who is known to have great power, either to help or hinder a community. Some witches heal, cause abundance, good fortune, etc... while other witches may cause famine, disease, terrible drought, and bad fortune.

A Witch may also be supernatural in a sense, some turn into animals, some command hoards of animals, some make your hair stand up on ends, they can charm you, put you to sleep, cook concoctions and brews in a cauldron. Now, you can get this with multi-class of Druid and Wizard or Sorcerer. But then you miss out on a capstone ability! And why have that? Plus the stats dependent on casting are spread between 2 different stats, where as with 1 class it only has to be 1 stat.

Witches of renown power also belong to their very own special club, a Coven. And what is coven but a support group of other Witches to help enhance each other's powers for a mutual benefit. [/sblock]

I will post a link to a thread which will have a preview of the Witch class in it, so for those of you waiting for the finished product, you can view it when it's done and not peek into the thread.
