D&D 4E I'm NOT upset about 4E

First Post
I am not upset about the publication of D&D 4E next year, for the following reasons:

- Releasing a new edition of a game five years after the last one isn't really all that unreasonable IMO.

- I never invested much in the rules side of D&D - as opposed to the setting - so paying for the new rules won't bother me as much.

- Frankly, while 3.5 was a decent system, there were always problems with it - the main problem bugging me personally was that it took to much time to prepare NPC stats. I'm willing to give the design team the benefit of the doubt when it comes to fixing these issues in the new edition - after all, I thought that 3.X was a vast improvement over the earlier editions as well.

Frankly, from my point of view the main issue right now is whether the new SRD for 4E will be as free as the old SRD (since I'm working on a publication of my own), and if that gets officially confirmed I will be happy with the development.

Is anyone else here not upset about D&D 4E? If so, post here and tell us why.

I'm not upset, for most of the same reasons that you listed. The 3.x rules are an improvement over previous editions in most respects (and I've been playing 20+ years now), but they're not perfect. I do think that it takes more time to prepare for a 3e game than the 1e and 2e games that I used to run. And there are concepts in 3.x that seemed like a good idea in 2000, but seven years of playtesting have shown to not work quite so well.

As pointed out in another thread, D&D has the longest "edition lifespan" of virtually any RPG on the market. All of the others publish revisions far more frequently.

And if 3e didn't suddenly make all my old 1e, 2e, and B/X/C/M material completely worthless, I highly doubt that 4e will.

I'm not upset, for pretty much the same reasons you've exposed.

(And the D&D 4th announcement has make me come back here, so that's another good news for me :-D )

Hi-

I'm not upset either, heck, I'm looking forward to a smoother and cleaned up edition of the D&D rules, plus I never spent vast amounts of money on WoTC or TPM books anyway.

So bring it on!

I'm not upset because WotC has been innovating and improving the game rules for some time now, and I think it's time to sweep all these innovations and improvements into the core rules.

I'm not upset because while I have nearly every non-setting supplement WotC has released, I know the game can be better. And recently there's been lots of innovations like swift/immediate actions, reserve feats, Book of Nine Swords, Magic Item Compedium, new stat block, etc. so that they'll probably do it better this time around (it's the pursuit of gaming perfection, not attaining perfection itself!)

I'm not upset. In fact, since they first announced 3rd Edition, I've expected a 4th Edition by 2010; and they've exceeded my schedule expectations.

They did an incredible job at improving the game with 3rd Edition, by revamping the rules and using community feedback. Since then, they've continued to modify and enhance the game, both with they're own ideas and from the community. Granted there are still some rules that could be improved upon, but such is the nature of a new edition. Hopefully they don't revamp the rules too much (I enjoy the flexiblity and streamlining of the current game), but from what I've read and heard I don't expect that. I think a new edition will be refreshing for old gamers and hope it encourages new ones to play.
