I'm too "cool" to game

On days when I have homeroom I usually bring a D&D book or two to read. Since i have homeroom first hour, I usually end up dragging my books with me almost all day. No one thinks any less of me for it, and a few people (not the gamer stereotype at all in some cases) are actually interested in starting. I should also mention however that we're just in 8th grade, so it may not be seen as "immature" yet to play those kinds of games. Also, I am the geekiest kid at school- Bad shape, bad complexion, long hair, oldish clothes, glasses, strange taste in music, huge star wars fan, RPGer (obviously), computer addict, and I hardly ever wear a shirt without a pocket stuffed with writing utensils, pencil sharpeners, spare hair bands, and a calculater. So it's not exactly like my classmates who would be put off by a geeky habbit haven't been pushed away already.

Geek among geeks

Wow. I can't believe that this is really a problem. I've never bothered to hide my gaming, but I also don't regale my coworkers with tails of my latest adventures, because I know they just aren't interested and might just not understand. It's the same reason I don't discuss general relativity theory with them. Or my girlfriend. Or my mom. Or...well, you get the point.

I don't hide it though. Just last December, a coworker asked me if I'd be attending the work Christmas party on Friday night. I turned to her, and simply said, "It's gaming night" because that's all the explanation that is needed.

As for being a geek, I embraced that long ago, particularly when I declared my physics major. Now that I teach physics in high school, some of the kids have found out that I game, JUST LIKE THEY DO!!! I am now first geek among geeks, and in some students' eyes, the coolest teacher to walk the Earth. Being a gamer may just impress someone. You never know.

I game and I am the damned coolest person I know. When I was in high school, all of the popular and attractive people would hang out with me, knowing well that I played D&D. I even converted a few.

I was sitting in class one day when the teacher read a bulletin notice about it. Everyone would always laugh, so she asked why.

"Because geeky people play it."

And that's true. But then I said, "I play it. It's a real sweet game. You use your imagination and creativity."

"Yeah, I always thought it seemed kinda cool. Just you always hear about geeky people playing it."

And then we went on to discuss Jeremy Irons and the D&D movie.

So, anyway, really cool people don't let people tell them how to be. Have pride, brother! You are one of the Chosen!

Too COOL to game? Come on....your supposed to wear your gamer geekiness as a badge of HONOR. Like me. Oh. Wait. That means.....no friends. Right. I getcha.
