Immersed in Lava - Have you ever seen it?

In the final session of our campaign last night, one of the characters willingly teleported into an erupting volcano in an attempt to save the legendary Phoenix. This was the first time I've ever gotten to use the "Immersion in Lava" rules. It made me extremely happy.

So, show of hands: Have you ever gotten to use the Immersion in Lava rules? They are, IMHO, one of the things that makes D&D worth playing: A rule so rare that you can play for 20 years without ever worrying about, but common enough to warrant an entry in the DMG index.

High level barbarian + swim ranks + some fairly hefty magical fire protection = one dead archer that was using an island in the middle of the lava-flow as his sniping position.

I've also seen people bull-rush demons and dinosaurs into a lava flow. Both survived, though they were fairly badly battered.

If I don't have lava in at least one aspect of my campaign I consider it a failure.

So, I've rolled the dice a couple of times.

Wouldn't both of them make excellent signatures?

The last big session I led, one of the characters (actually, the long standing NPC) not only took the 20d6 damage for being immersed in lava, but also took the 20d6 damage for falling 200ft before he hit it!!

Best part of it all is that he lived.

Ah, lava.

I got to see pcs immersed in lava once in 2e via a gate to the middle of a pool of magma, and once again in a trap in 3e in Return to the Tomb of Horrors.

Oh, the joy!

I had a PC immersed in lava once, and survived. She was petrified by a Half-Dragon Basilisk (in a red dragon lair), and to prevent her from being restored quickly (a priority, since she was the only cleric in a large party), a fire giant threw her into a large lava pool. The DM started rolling for Lava damage each round (subtracting hardness from the damage, and maybe some Fire resistance for being stone). Fortunately the fight was over two rounds later and one PC had Fire Immunity from a spell and could wade out into the lava and fish my character out before it was too late.

I had a PC fall into a lava stream due to a botched teleport, but he was a half-red dragon so he easily survived. His items didn't fare so well.
