Impact of increasing paladin/ranger caster level?

You would also double the cost of scrolls of paladin and ranger scrolls, wands, and potions since their minimum caster level is the lowest level at which the spell can be cast (4th level for a 1st level spell and 8th level for a 2nd level spell).

This might not necessarily be a bad thing since scrolls of Holy Sword, for instance are a wee bit of a good deal for the price.

Having caster level=class level will have a strong impact on all spell with duration 1 round/level, unless the Paladin/Ranger is really high level. This is the case since the 'typical' encounter lasts about 5 to 12 rounds. Having caster level=class level/2 significantly weakens such spells.

Yes, this issue was brought up during Wulf Ratbanes storyhour - the high (12th?) level paladin was able to obtain a scroll of a 4th level paladin spell dirt cheap because of the caster level, which rather undermined the fact that the spell normally wouldn't be available to the party until the wizards and clerics are purchasing 7th level spells at caster level 13 or 14!

Going with my suggestion of caster level = class level-3 would probably work out quite fairly in this regard.

A quick look only shows Hold Animal, Dispel Evil and Holy Sword as 1r/level spells. While a ranger could be casting Hold Animal at level 8 (normally lasting 4r by the book) the two Paladin spells are both 4th level, so he would have to be 14th level minimum to cast them, so lasting 7r. My proposal would make that 14r.

I think I'd be cool with that.

The more I think about it, the more I like it. I think I'll go with it (although few of my players will be in a position to take advantage just yet!)

Cheers

Okay, I'm slightly hijacking things. Would it be reasonable to allow paladins and rangers (probably assassins and blackguards too) extra spells per spell level for higher wisdoms?

I just find it a little curious why they don't benefit a bit more than just getting spells a level earlier. That too seems an odd mechanic.

Extra spells? They do get bonus spells like all other caster. Spells known is all since they cast Divine like.
