Impelling Force

A bolt of force? This is where it is confusing from a fluff perspective. I have been house ruling that they can be slid in any direction, indpendant of the "adjacent to an ally" thing as i can't see the conection to the other player.

If you are hitting them with a bolt of force, like a gust of wind, it shouldn't be unable to work if they don't end next to the dwarf. force is force.

Now if you were compelling them to slide next to an ally, then i could understand that, but as someone said before that should be a will save.

It would be more important, in my opinion, to maintain the powers effect than to maintain the fluff they quickly placed in italics.

But do what you'd like.

I mean we can keep asking questions. Why does the Bard's charisma affect the attack if it's a magical bolt of force?

I think you're unnecessarily over-thinking it and getting hung up on it.

Magic can work weirdly. This spell is an example of counterintuitive magic, which is why it's not often taught in mage schools, it takes a certain APTITUDE for soul-magic.

What you're actually doing is binding the soul of your enemy and your ally together, and converting that binding into magical force, to move your enemy where you want them.
But please, don't tell the rest of your party that, some people don't approve of such things...

(IOW: anything can be fluffed :p)

Why do people look at magical effects and immediately think in terms of 'Engineering 256, forces and counter stresses' instead of 'Defense Against the Dark Arts, year 5'.

You shoot a bolt of magic mojo (which is all 'force' is in D&D), and that magic mojo picks them up and sets them down where you like while you wiggle your fingers impressively.

It's magic, damnit. Stop trying to make physics work on it.

Edit:

Charisma affects it because Charisma stopped being personal attractiveness an edition ago. It now represents your ability to mentally impose yourself upon others, be it through attractiveness, likeability, intimidation, or magical imposition. Magic can be channeled in such a manner... a bard's method is to use his sheer force of will to change the world around him. He doesn't learn the secret methods and tricks behind it (Intellegence) nor does he use his intuition to grasp at the powersources of the ancients or divine (Wisdom). Charisma is the use of mental brute force on the universe.
