Important - Please Do Not Send Me Money Via Paypal

Dammit, I just did this like a week ago, and emailed Morrus about it a few hours earlier, wondering if it worked. My wonderful luck that I should wait until the brief time between the account freezing and Morrus warning people not to do it.

Crappedy crap crap crap.

Don't worry, I'll make sure you don't lose your money. Might take a while, but I will get those community supporter accounts processed whether or not I'm able to get at the funds. After all, it's not your fault!

The net.whiners aren't the ones asking for your money and personal information, though. Before I would trust
Requests for personal information in matters of commerce involving large sums or money aren't only reasonable but necessary. I don't think PayPal could operate if their accounts were owned by people known only as CybberStudd666 with no known address besides a PO box in Trinidad. The fact that they obligate users to provide such information (and they explicitly say refusing to provide it will result in termination of the account and payment of any undisputed balance) for resolution of disputes enhances my impression of their reliablity rather than diminishes it. If they were regulated as a bank in the US, they'd certainly have to require such information.
I agree with Morrus though that I would hesitate to rely on them as a medium for discharging important finanical obligations unless they have a very good reason for the freeze. For the mainstay of their business, small eBay transactions, they seem sound enough though.

Has anyone here used Worldpay before? I've glanced over the website, but I'm a little unclear on how it works. I've been told it's a better solution than using PayPal or a PayPal clone like, say, Brightpay.

note: I am not a lawyer.

If you do end up going to court, sueing them under EU rather (edit) than (/edit) British law might be a very good idea. Mostly hearsay, I must admit, but worth looking into if it does need to be done.

(edit) Complete layman posting on hearsay! (/edit)

I think some of the problems with needing so much information is money laundering laws. Accounts with extensive usage with 1000s of dollars would need a lot of information. At a bank you can go in and they can get it all down, but over the internet they have to be especially careful. I am of course not implying Morrus of doing anything, nor saying Paypal is being very good about how they handle things. But I think this may be why they do things the way they do.

Frankly Morrus, if, as you say, you had thousands of dollars in your PayPal account at the time they froze it, then it would seem that you have a sufficently large income to justify the expense of a merchant account and the attendant e-commerce bits to allow you to take credit card payments directly on your site. Judging from its site, Worldpay might be a step in the right direction, but I'd also suggest shopping around. Have a look at what your local banks offer.

If you haven't already done so, I would also suggest including a link to this thread in your next communication with PayPal ;)

It's not all mine, unfortunately. Half of my job is just redirecting money around - RPGNow pays me, I pay the server, that sort of thing.

I am looking into other, more direct options though. Worlday seems pretty good from what I've read at their site. Expensive setup, but once that's paid for life looks like it may be much easier.

Understood.

Sounds like you're heading in the right direction. Have you had a look at what your local banks offer by way of e-commerce solutions?

Once again, I will shout it out...

I hate paypal.

They have frozen one account on me in the past... three YEARS ago. And I still haven't gotten it back. They keep saying that the account is registered to someone in California instead of Canada... and they keep mailing stuff (and it keeps getting sent back) to someone in Vankleek Hill, Ontario, California, instead of in Vankleek Hill, Ontario, CANADA.

The ONLY reason I started a new paypal account after that garbage was to buy my community supporter account. And even this time they won't accept my attempts to verify the account once I created it and made a single payment. So they have gained ANOTHER $1.95 USD from me for that "verification charge".

HUMPH.
