Improved Familiar

Just got the XP to level up to 6th and need to choose a feat before next session. I am considering Improved Familar for my 6th level Sorcerer (Human with Precocious Apprentice, Draconic Bloodline, and the Acid Splash reserve feat, primarilly a blaster) mainly because I have never really used a familar because I have been conscerend about their fragility and want to try something different. He doesn't have a familiar now. If he takes the feat he is like going with a small air elemental to mainly serve as a scout and messanger.

Suggestions for a better/more interesesting/more useful familiar? Or is the feat just not worth it?

In terms of mechanics, the best Improved familiar for a Good arcane caster is the pseudodragon. For a neutral caster I'd say a mephit. For evil, the imp.

Elementals have nice immunities, but not many good abilities, comparatively speaking.

He is neutral but IIRC a mephit isnt available until 7th and with his draconic bloodline he might be able to get a pseudodragon anyway. Anyone else have an idea for a cool familiar?

EDIT: And is the feat worth it when compared with some of the other things I am considering like Spell Penetration or a Reserve Feat.

If you can get it, a psuedodragon familiar is fantastic. It can do the flying scout routine, it can speak telepathically to creatures within 100', it has blindsense, and if times are tough, you can polymorph it into a larger dragon (with weenie hitpoints).

Failing that, get an Air Mephit. Flying Scout, semi-useful breath weapon, a couple of spell-like abilities, and it can heal itself by fanning itself.

From 1st ed getting a pseudo dragon is iconic for the good wizard. You had to be real lucky or had a DM willing to work at maximizing you ability to get this creature. You could almost always get an Imp or Quasit since you can bargain with outsiders to get them.
