Improved Trip with any weapon?

Search Kazaa for "aikido" in the video category. Pretty much any video where they whip out the practice swords will give a concrete demonstration of tripping with a non-tripping weapon. (I have a couple in my hard drive demonstrating throws that involve sword-on-sword contact alone.)

... Logical, no? ...
I agree that it seems logical that you would use your legs to make an unarmed trip attempt, and as such it should be possible while wielding a sword & shield, for instance.

But by that logic, it should also be possible to make an unarmed attack at any time you're armed (like allowing the aforementioned sword & shield wielder to kick instead of swinging his sword).

Is that actually permitted by the rules?

Thanks for the edjamacation. I bow to your superior knowledge!

But as a skeptic, I still say it'd be weak. Nevertheless, my ignorance shines plain before thee!

Now if they could just put SUMO and AIKIDO in the rules...

Short answer: I don't see why a DM wouldn't allow you to attempt a kick in combat as an unarmed attack.
