In D&D, what slot does a mask take up?

Adventurer
In the DMG, it lists headbands, hats, helmets, or phylacteries as going on the head. It lists eyes lense or goggles as going on or over the eyes. Which slot would a mask (for example the Mask of the Skull in the DMG) take up?

It depends on whether the mask is "on the head" or just "over the eyes." You can have masks that do either. In this example, it's in the likeness of a human skull, which seems to be fully over the whole head, but then it clarifies it to be on the face, which to me seems more like a goalie mask. Therefore, I'd say it fits over the eyes only and takes up the goggles slot.

Edit: and for talking about skull masks, I make my 6,666th post. How intriguing. :)

Why wouldn't it take up the head slot? It is covering part of the head as well as the eyes. In fact, couldn't you argue it would take up both?

I explained my reasoning above. Namely, that it covers only the face and not the whole head. Many helmets do not even cover the face at all, so you would be saying that something that only covers the face interferes with something else that doesn't even go into that area of the body.

Actually, no. Unless an item says otherwise, it only takes up a slot.

There are several crystal masks in the XPH. According to the SRD:
A crystal mask is treated as eyewear or goggles for the purpose of determining which items can be worn on the body.
So I2K and diaglo seem to have the right of it.

Psionics aren't Core, so I don't think that should apply in this case.

...on second though, it might make a decent house rule, though.

If not, you have an inconsistency if you use Psionics.

Calling it a house rule requires that you be sure of the actual rule. Thus, explain to us the actual rule, complete with rules quotes supporting your position.

I think every instance of "masks" uses the eyewear slot.

Including Complete Adventurer (Mask of Lies) and others.

I've seen examples where an item detailed as a 'mask' takes up either the head slot or the eyewear slot. In this example, I'm going to go with 'eyewear.'

CM wins again, Reveal! :)
