In defiance of Dragons--Homebrew 4E campaign starting up

Jaden is motivated by the need to escape the life he was born to. Everyone expects him to just carry on the line of his families fishing business but he has no interest in it. He carries a chip on his shoulder because he is completely captivated by the art of swordplay and pretty much everyone says he can't succeed at it.

Last day for submissions and/or concept tweaking. I'll be making my decisions tomorrow and we can start blending backstories, etc.

Unfortunately, I still don't have my books, so I can't answer any questions about stats, wealth, etc. quite yet.

Once again, thanks to everyone who has shown interest.

Drat. Umm...whiny tiefling?

Perhaps an old wizard wandered through town and taught him instead, so as not to put up with the tiefling child's whinyness?

Updated basic concept info:

Name: Osric Vonheim
Race: Dwarf
Class: Fighter (great weapon build)

Basic Background: Osric never really knew his father- the older dwarf worked as a guardsman for Evenfall, and he died fighting orcs (Or whatever?) that had been raiding the outlying farms which supported the town. Osric's mother raised him herself- she worked as a healer, midwife, and herbalist- as such Osric grew up seeing a lot of children around the house, and soon developed a protective instinct to those who were younger or weaker than he was. And even from a fairly early point, lots of people were younger and weaker than he was- he took an apprenticeship with the local smith early on, and quickly turned into a burly lad, even for a dwarf. His apprenticeship didn't work out terribly well, though- he was always more interested in wielding weapons than in making them, and he often practiced for hours after his normal chores were done. What spare time he had was often spend hanging around with the towns guardsmen- at least until a few years ago. With only a few professional enforcers in town, competition for the spots was fierce, and some of the men who took the job were less than completely honorable. Recently, Osric became disillusioned with the local guardsmen, and he has hired out as an independent guard for some of the gold panners who wanted to venture a bit farther out along the river, into dangerous territory. Just last week, Osric very nearly got himself arrested when he stepped into a dispute between one of the guardsmen and a young woman who was not interested in the man's "attention". Only the fact that several reputable townsfolk, (including one of the local clergy) witnessed the incident kept things from getting ugly. Osric has continued to practice with a few other locals about his own age, but he seems quieter and more gruff- obviously the atmosphere in town is wearing on him.

Personality: Osric is a good-hearted fellow- he is hard-working and brave, though a bit gruff, at least around those he doesn't know well. Behind his stone-faced exterior, he is nice enough, but he is much better at listening than at speaking. He loves heroic tales, and when among friends he can laugh and tell stories as well as anyone. He has a strong protective instinct around those who are less able to defend themselves.

Late to the Table

Here’s a pitch for a dragonborn rogue:

Akara Thriv has been an indentured servant for the past fourteen years. Slavery is illegal, of course, and so it can’t be said that he is a slave to Phillian Oakspine, but nevertheless that’s what it looks like to those in Evenfall, when they see Akara, which they occasionally do, outside of the wizard’s estate. Akara knows he is without rights, and, in principle, accepts this: Dragonborn are not overly welcome in the town at any rate, and since his bloodline—however distantly—is cognate with that of the Green dragon overlord (his first puff of poison gas when he was a child attracted the attention of the city administrators). Drunken mobs of citizens have broken his limbs for this, because of who he is, and, though these attempts are fewer now that he is full grown, they still might if the circumstances warrant—a silent protest against the wizard’s impositions, or against Rixallithen’s.

Akara has learned what he can, and is slightly more capable than Oakspine believes. He is familiar to some of the villagers, who have never seen him defy authority, and many know he is being punished, lashed, scarred, and used, only because of circumstances beyond his control. Akara has even traveled outside of the village a few times, when Oakspine has wanted to have reports of what has transpired outside of his ken. Each time, Akara has returned, bringing reports that have proved of moderate use to the elf.

(If this is too antithetical to the concept of the town, a rival thought I had is a half-elf rogue focusing on diplomacy and intimidation. But I like the idea of Phillian sending his slave on the quest (whatever it is!) to keep tabs on its progress.)

So I was looking at the PHB and the proposed characters so far and thought maybe I'd put a second submission forward. Not sure if you're ok with that Redclaw, but here we go.

Name: Corbin Tallfellow
Race: Halfling
Class: Rogue (Probably Brawny Rogue)
Role: Striker

Appearance: Corbin stands all of 3'8", short even for a halfling. His dark brown eyes carry a glint of mischief and they're quite large, seeming to take everything in. He wears his lighter, chestnut hair longer and flowing as the females seem to enjoy it that way. He carries a small scar on right cheek from where a fishing hook got caught and pulled out by his drunken father. Corbin prefers to wear clothes made from natural creatures, feeling closer to the world and finds them strangely comforting.

Personality: A habitual charmer, Corbin knows that many underestimate his due to his size, especially in Evenfall. He is able to get by on his charms and wits, Corbin can convince others to do jobs for him without them even realizing it. A good-natured trickster, Corbin secretly desires to do more in his life than playing simple pranks on simple people. He puts on his happy-go-lucky facade to hide the pain he feels every day.

Background: Corbin was part of a small halfling community very close to Evenfall, more of a hamlet than anything. They were farmers and fisherman, trading their catch with the town of Evenfall in exchange for tools and other wares. Corbin grew up in that closeknit community, enjoying the time he spent sneaking off to Evenfall, there was so much to see for the inquisitive halfling. He also snuck off to avoid his father, Corbin's father had fallen under the influence of the bottle and took out any of his anger on young Corbin. Corbin enjoyed the ecclectic mix of other races in Evenfall, much different than his home. He befriended all manner of individuals with his charm and easygoing nature. It was during one of these excursions that his home was destroyed. One of the more adventurous of his cousins had heard the tales of the treasures of the dragons and dared to attempt to steal from Rhixallithen. The green dragon razed their community to the ground in retaliation, leaving Corbin an orphan and homeless. He wandered aimlessly through the carnage wrought by the green dragon, looking at the desicated corpses, the chlorine gas melting their flesh. Corbin cried long and hard during this time, but afterwards he swallowed his grief, pilfered what minor valuables were there and turned back the way he came. Corbin managed to convince the jeweler to take him on as a runner, picking up the gold that others panned and administering the administrative functions, allowing him to focus totally on crafting. He practiced on his free time with a short sword he acquired from his community and shurikens that he became quite adept at throwing.

Alright.. final submission time than ;).

I thought long and hard about fitting a my rebellious half-elf in there, hitting the fine line of making him an insubordinate outcast without making him immediatly sign up for a death-warrant. Hope the following pitch is something that'd enrich the story. Looking forward to hear from you tomorrow.

Bheazir, half-elf rebel-warlord of Evenfall.

Appearance:
Lithe and lissom, Bheazir is not a very imposing figure, leaning physically closer to his elven than to his human ancestry. His mist-grey eyes are watchful under strands of his blonde, almost white hair that could certainly use a new cut. His clothing is functional and well worn; showing patches and stitches in many places, but seems generally well cared for.

Background:
Bheazir is a half-elf native to Evenfall. Ever since growing up, Bheazir exhibited a strong and fierce sense of justice, which often brought him at odds with the local authorities. His life has been an ongoing struggle to make his place in the town. Reckless words and unwise actions however have earned Bheazir a reputation as a troublemaker with the guard. He’s infamous for some ill-advised campaigning against some of the more openly abusive town guards both openly and in secrecy.

Bheazir lives in a small cottage on the fringes of Evenfall with his grandfather Dhealain, an old, introverted man whose disfiguring scars and crippled leg are believed to date back to the second flight. Though the old man can barley walk upright through town and has never been regarded as a thread by Norsten, village gossip has it that he was once served as captain or possibly even knight in one of the now-gone city states to the west.

Among other things, Bheazir is suspected by Norsten to be involved in a recent mid-night scramble started by two masked vigilantes at the house of guardsman Skravress, a foul-tempered Dragonborn guard nicknamed ‘the Bloodscale’ by the folks of Evenfall. The incident was covered up quickly and quietly as not to engender stories of rebellion. Rumours have it, however, that a sizable stash of valuables from travellers and townsfolk the Bloodscale had secretly pocketed for himself was uncovered. Many townsfolk hope that the bullying guardsman will in the future be reigned in and possible disciplined by Norsten and his constable.

The Build
I'd like to build this character as (an inspiring) Warlord. He's a bit of a seasoned guerrilla fighter, having led and organised small acts of defiance already. As mentioned before, I would greatly like to explore some 4e multi-classing as befitting the group (I'm favoring mulit-class Paladin currently..). Taking a religious touch/mission would fit best IMO and easy to play out with a few divinely inspired descriptions of powers.

His grandfather Dhealain was put in there as well for providing a possible link/hook (if needed) to a faith of justice (Bahamut?) in addition to providing some tactic and ‘Warlord’ training without needing Bheazir to join the Evenfall guard.

How about another tiefling who was practicing his magic in secret. Tarken Blackhorn, an aging tiefling with a desire to regain the standing of wizards in the long-forgotten tiefling empire, resented Phillian's control of his competition and knew that he was twice the wizard that fool of an elf could ever be. He had a sub-basement to his house that was warded to prevent scrying. There he continued his studies, but as age started to catch up to him he worried about the future. In response, he indoctrinated his grandson into the art.

Recently, he overreached once too often, and was discovered by Phillian as he worked against the elf. He was banished from Evenfall, but he made his grandson promise to stay and look after the house...

Welcome Kobold Stew. Thanks for the submission. Our first, possibly only, rogue submission.

Speaking of which, Renau1g--Since I decided not to look at multiple submissions earlier, I feel like staying consistent. Which of the two concepts would you be more interested in playing at this point. I'd rather keep it even and fair so everyone gets one proposal as I get to the point of considering.

Nice changes, Zweischneid. I think Bheazir is looking much more in tune with the town and campaign, and I like the introduction of the Bloodscale. I think I'll have some fun using him as a foil.
