In Game/Out of Game Issues

This guy is clearly a cack. He isnt going to change just because you nicely ask him to. In fact, it might intensify his behavior due to the sheer awkwardness of you having confronted him about it. Most folks who behave like cacks at the gaming table feel deficient in some area of their lives and are projecting it upon others at the table. Others might feel awkward in social situations and just handle it poorly. Either way, I think this goobmaster will end up with the boot from the GM or you will go mad.

Now, if it wasn't my table, that would be more complex. But in that case, I'd probably decide to either solve the problem in character by killing the knob's PC

Worst possible advice. If he's a jerk, you'll take it in character and kill his PC. How will your PC explain it to the other PCs? Will you accept the consequences of your evil murderous act in character? If he turns the tables and kills your PC will you want a re-do? And will the other players and DM appreciate your taking an out of character argument into the game? I know I wouldn't, and in my eyes a player who was willing to take matters into their own hands like that would be just as bad as the jerk, so when you went to the DM about it, who's to say the DM will even want to take your side in the situation?

Well, in this limited respect, I think you do have a point here ThirdWizard. I'm not a big fan of this solution because this then immediately forces the awkward issue of whether the individual should create a new character. Also, I'm not a big fan of doing violence to the narrative structure of the campaign in order to solve an interpersonal issue. In my games, player stuff and character stuff are so separate that I'm not sure what if any effect something like this would have.

Feeling Defensive.

So, a couple things:

1) When some one posts about how he's getting ripped on in the game and is looking for advice, ripping on him by inferring that he has no balls and/or spine is counter productive. Especially when, after the balls crack, he posts that he found the comments offensive and proceeds to talk about the steps he's taken to remedy the situation with the player in order to show that he has demontrated a level of testicular fortitude up until this point.

2) Perhaps most of you aren't friends with the people you game with and treat your grup more like a work place environment where people can be "fired" and leave you life entirely. I don't. I like this guy outside of game and am experiencing these issues within the confines of the game.

That said, my situation is more complex than a simple "kick him to the curb." Unfortunately, I can't just kill the monster and get the treasure in this case. It's more involved than that.

In fact, the insults you all are throwing at him (which I assume are meant to make me feel better?) are also offending me. I don't want to have to feel like I need to defend my friend, I just want some advice on how others have handled similar situations.

So far, Piratecat has done the best job of giving me what I was looking for. It must be a Boston thing.

I think I'll stick to rules questions in the future when I post to these boards. Apparently if I look for social advice in connection to gaming, my friends and I will be insulted.

I usually end thse things by thanking people for the time/effort they took in replying to my query. But in this case I won't. I mave big enough balls and a strong enough spine to not thank people for insulting me. I also have enough diplomacy to not hurl insults back. Perhaps that's why I'm in the situation I'm in.

To those of you for whom this post doesn't apply, have a good day.
