In need of an optimized vampire progression

questbreaker

First Post
hey all, im looking to play a vampire. i was talking to someone who frequently plays necromancers and i really got interested in playing a vampire, and i looked through the libris mortis and various other sources and im really looking for help optimizing a vampire, preferably one that can qualify for vampire lord as soon as possible (probably like lv18 if i did my math right). but to do that i need 10 player class levels, and i dont know what those levels should be.

i should add in that i usually play melee fighters, my two current characters are low level melee combatants, one is a 3rd lvl swashbuckler and the other is a Ftr 2 / Bbn 1 on his way to frenzied berserker. im willing to go out on a limb with this one, if necessary. im looking for one of the following types of characters, but feel free to post characters that fit outside of any of these ideas, im really looking for something interesting. also, i need ways to get around my apparent inability to do much of anything during the day.

1. my first vampire idea was a fighter, of course (since im always in that melee mindset). with all the strength bonuses, i was thinking of going straight fighter until i can become a vampire, then keeping my final levels for vampire lord. just be the typical two hand weapon fighter power attack build. alternatively, a ranged weapon would be good i think if it were made to make good use of the vampires improved strength.

2. my second idea was a rogue type character, make use of the spider climb and gaseous form to aid my sneakiness. maybe pick up hide in plain sight somewhere. then vamp lord at the end. also diplomacy to help me out against people who were sitting on the "should-i-or-should-i-not-destroy-the-vampire" fence.

3. my third idea was perhaps an evil cleric, i dont have much experience with the class, but was looking for buffs and whatnot. something to improve my turning resistance, boost me in any way, i dont know for sure as i cant say i have experience playing a cleric.

4. what i am really looking to accomplish here is perhaps some sort of charismatic leader type PC, with optimized leadership and/or optimized undead leadership. a mount would be nice but is not neccessary by any means. with this i am looking to put as many bodies as i can between myself and my enemies. as well as potential cattle to feed on (if they are living) or unskilled labor. with this build i really dont care what the class is.

5. another quirky idea i had was maybe a druid of some type.

------------

i know it is asking a lot, but i would like to see a 15, 20, and 25 level progression of ANY vampire idea you may have, be it one not listed above, or especially #4 as it intrigues me the most. below are a few absolutely non-negotiable stipulations-

1. must start off as a core race, preferably human

2. must qualify for and make it to vampire lord, preferably lv 19 and 20 being levels 1 and 2 of vampire lord

3. must have some way at level 15 to operate and survive in the sunlight, be it magic items or special abilities

4. ABSOLUTELY NO PSIONS

and here are a few preferences, but can be waived for particularly awesome ideas:

1. not a primary spellcaster - i say this because my brief forays into the spellcasting world did not end well, the closest thing to a primary spellcaster ive ever succesfully played is a druid / master of many forms / warshaper. i dont know what it is, but im just not good at spellcasting, i cant really get into the mindset. if you post a spellcaster idea, please include tips as far as what to cast, combos, etc.

2. can be anything from any non-open-source book, but i have to provide my GM with an electronic copy of the source. ive got lots of books and stuff electronically, please cite the source material though for anything non-core.

3. please include the cost for any spellstitching you have done, any magical items (and their source), etc. just generally dumb it down for me.

4. provide for me the order of attributes from what i should put the most points into to what i should put the least points into. our GM lets us roll until we get scores we want pretty much. we roll 4d6 per score, scrapping the lowest die and adding the other 3. we roll 7 scores like this and then discard the lowest score and assign the remaining 6. as for vampire HP the GM said that once i become a vampire i can reroll my HP as a vampire from lv1, so no matter what class i guess i have d12 as a hit die for every level.

5. please provide the cost of making the coffin, as well as transport (maybe undead porters?) and what measures i would need to take to protect my coffin, both from goody two shoes npc's and greedy / angry PC's, since our group has a healthy amount of infighting going on at all times. (you know, encouraging the lv2 elf fighter fighter who uses a longsword and shield with like no feat support and terrible str and con to go charge a CR9, or laughing as the useless lv3 hexblade gets mauled by a dire lion, etc.)

show me your best! (or, er...worst?)

Blighter. Fits the undead theme, you'll be awesome in melee and there's nearly no faster way to 9th level spells. Hehe.

i looked at it, but i dont see how it would play well into a vampires natural abilities. plus my spellcasting is dependent upon deforestation...not that great i dont think.

how about this?

(insert class, perhaps rogue) 3 / Fighter 4 / (+8 LA vamp template) / 3 Master Vampire / (+3 LA for Vampire Lord) = ECL 21 Master Vampire Lord

what is the advisability of this?
(come on people i've only gotten 1 reply)

Given the huge stat boosts of the Vampire template, Monk seems like it could be a solid fit. Monks are peerless grapplers, which is also good for the Vampire.

Warlock (Complete Arcane) could also be interesting, but with the +8 LA from vampire the invocations will never amount to more than party tricks.

Barbarian could be fun. Fly into a Rage, lay some smack down with energy-drain slam attacks, be immune to Fatigue when the Rage ends... :]

(insert Sorcerer) 7 / (+8 LA vamp template) / Life Drinker 10 /Sorcerer 15 = 40 levels (BoVD)

You did want to be evil right?

Oh you wanted to play a good guy...ummm don't know what to tell you

Necrotic Focus +3 bonus : serves as a channel for your energy drain...So your bestowing negative levels. (MIC 39)

Monk 7/ (+8 LA vamp template)/ Monk 5 = 20

Fighter 10/Death Knight +5/Fighter 5 = 20 (MM2)

thanks for the helpful reference, i had not seen that. as far as this campiagn goes, i think i have my mind set on the following however:

Swashbuckler 3 / Swordsage 4. then add +8 LA for the vamp template. thats ECL 15, then take Master Vampire levels 1-3, then i would qualify for the vampire lord template provided that my character has lived for 100 years, which means i would have to be a vampire at character creation.
