Earthdawn. Doesn't different companies produce two different versions?

I enjoyed some of those games, but for fantasy, I always go back to D&D.

Yes, there are currently two licensed versions of Earthdawn. Living Room Games got a license from FASA to do an updated second edition of the game. It's still pretty similar to the original, just tidied up a little, and rebalanced slightly. Redbrick Limited got another license, seemingly just to reprint the original game material. But that project grew until it became an exercise in rewriting also. Their colossal books incorporate a lot of material from various original books.

However neither strays so far from the original source that they are mutually unusable. Earthdawn has always been more about ideas than mechanics.

For those who like HERO but can't find people willing to sit through ChaGen, you might want to try Mutants & Masterminds.

If you're unfamiliar with the game, its a D20 descendant RPG stripped down something like Marvel Super Heroes that has about 90% of the flexibility of HERO. While I haven't done so myself, I've heard many people on these boards have tried it for FRPG campaigns, with good results.

HarnMaster 3.0 is a fantasy rpg that's in print. I really like it but have always had trouble locating willing players.

That's because they're frightened that they could die in combat. But I'd play, if only I were closer...

I'll second meomwt. Earthdawn takes a little getting sued to, but it's a system that uses archetypes with some flexibility. It has enough setting and background to get everyone on the same page, without dictating your campaign for you. And for once there is a decent balance between the power of spellcasters and warriors; spells are merely one way of tapping the magic of the world.

There are two revised versions of the game available right now, but both are still close enough to the original game, that material for any of them can be used interchangeably with little work.

Go on, give the game a shot!

I'll third Earthdawn. Love the game. I've just, finally, after years of whining, convinced my group to try it on a pick-up basis.

It has one of my favorite all-time set of magic item rules. And I loves me some T'skrang.

Judging from the info I've seen on the LRGames site (and the release schedule from my distributors), Living ROom Games seems to have pretty much dropped Earthdawn. Their license expired and they're having trouble getting it renewed.

I just got the Redbrick .pdfs recently and I'm loving it.
