Partially due to my DM at the time (social penalties on the race and no pc assassins allowed) but I played exactly one half-orc in 1st ed. I have played more in 3rd ed. So 3rd ed. wins that one.

I don't remember having anyone play a half-orc in my AD&D days. They weren't an attractive roleplaying choice for my group. As an effective race there was human or multi-classed non-human (only in campaigns expected to end before high levels - which was most of them). Half-orcs didn't have any real attractive multi-classing options until at least UA as I recall.

In 3.X I've seen quite a few half-orcs. My RttToEE game had an barbarian/wizard. My Eberron games have had a few, and even some full orcs.
