Adventurers are sort of like freelancers. They don't have a steady income; they only get money when they get hired to do a one-time job, or if they find it lying around. Just like freelancers, adventurers (from a realistic perspective) would probably have a steady job for when they weren't adventuring. Some are hired with a steady wage, and simply need to keep performing well in order to stay hired. Others are entrepreneurs who put their own money into running a business, which provides a great profit if the owner is willing to take a few risks. A DM could simulate this by just taking treasure from the allotted parcels, but these subsystems allow you to replicate actual work, risk, and profit.

Well, IME most adventurers live high on the hog when they're flush with treasure, then go find something that they can kill that has stuff which they can take. They don't need a job during downtime- they're pretty rich.

YMMV, though.

another post pointed out that well....adventureres were too rich compared to the commoners.. and wanted to "fix it"
so if 5th level are the 1 in 100 people in society then they are going to be pretty flush and wont be working at the equivlant of mackyDs(other low heath food chains are avalible)
