how can a cleric increase caster level, outside of a bead of karma, and just gaining more levels? is there a feat, or item, or class feature that does this?

The orange ioun stone increases caster level. The Heirophant class increases caster level through the use of spell power, but only for spell effects. Your spells per day doesn't increase.

I always assumed the Ioun Stone only increased your caster level for spell effects as well. Have I read this wrong?

If you are multiclassed, there is the Improved Caster Level feat from the Netbook of Feats. Each time you take this feat, it adds +1 caster level to one spellcasting class for purposes of spell effects and caster level checks, up to your character level.

Nope, you read it right. As far as I know, the only way to increase caster level for purposees of daily spells and spells known is to gain levels.

Woah. That's nice. Two levels fighter and spending two normal feats, and your Ftr/Wiz is as good as any wizard but has some additional hitpoints, BAB, Fort saves...

Guess this feat didn't get good marks concerning balance.

I doesn't sound as a Fighter bonus feat! :D
Ok, you meant probably to spend normal feats on them... yes definitely too good.

Eh. Improved Spellcasting just means you get a bonus to spell effects (6d6 instead of 5d6 fireballs) and caster level checks. You don't get extra spells per day or (the biggie) higher level spells. If anything, I'd say it's weak.
