Information teleported between atoms

I'm under the impression that the way this works is that the two photons need to be in contact with each other, and then seperated later... at which point you can transmit information instantly between the two points. No good for contacting anyone without a custom made reciever, made at the same time as the transmitter. So it'd be great for astronauts going to mars (no lagtime when phoning home to mom!) but utterly useless for making first contact.

Remember that this is just the beginning of such reasearches. What this will possibly lead to 100 years in the future? And 250, 500, or 1000 years? I want to see this as the hint of the answer of bypassing Light speed someday to come.
