Insight bonus to AC...

kreynolds

First Post
Should an Insight bonus to armor class be priced as Armor (bonus squared x 1,000gp), Deflection/Natural Armor (bonus squared x 2,000gp), or Luck (bonus squared x 2,500gp)? My thoughts are to go with (bonus squared x 2,000gp). What do you peeps think?

While we're at it, what about a Profane/Sacred bonus to AC?

I would put the multiplier at 4,000 because it throws off the balance of AC bonuses to add yet another type to the list.

Actually, Vax, that's in core rules' lists of bonus types ...

I'd go with 2500, kr. The cheap 1000 multiplier for Armor bonuses is because they don't stack with worn armor, which is by far the cheapest way to raise your AC. The 2000 multiplier for natural armor, deflection, etc. is lower than the 2500 for luck because their are low-level spells (barkskin, shield of faith) that provide AC bonuses of that type, which again won't stack with the item; but there really aren't many ways to get a luck bonus. As insight bonuses are also extremely uncommon, your magic item will also stack with virtually anything else the characters are likely to have.

The only exception is if you house-ruled the Monk AC bonus as an insight bonus, as some do ... then 2000 might be OK.

Price it as 2,500 gp - that's the way it's done at the Mind's Eye, the official psionics web feature. Look at the Crystal Master PrC and look for a Moonstone Master Third Eye. (It actually costs double, since someone at WotC thought a Third Eye doesn't take a slot.) Of course, it's designed for psions, who often manifest powers that grant insight bonuses :D

Note that you have to be careful with this - there's a slightly munchkin sword that gives morale bonuses. Good thing morale bonuses don't help against DR.

Oh wait - here's the URL http://www.wizards.com/dnd/article....h level crystal master 125,000 gp -- [/code]

You fool!

The proper formula is bonus x 2500 x bonus.

I'd think that the minor bonus types like Luck, morale, competence and insight would all be based off 2500. I don't think that anything giving sacred or profane bonuses is even in the core rules, so those might be more.

I lost my DMG. However, the only things I could find were consecrate, hallow, and the evil versions. But sacred and profane don't add to actually useful abilities, unless you fight tons of undead. You won't find a sacred bonus to AC, for example, outside a supplement. All the other bonus types apply to lots of different things, even with the limited sample size in the core rules.
