about instant death, in 3.0
at about lvl 17 we were fighting a half-fiend and my yet unharmed wizard was among those attacked with a horrid wilting, i make my safe, and the DM calls out the dmg 102 half that for those who make the safe. that was the firt time my DM realised i had only 47 hp, due to con 10 and no constitution items.....

A +6 Con Amulet is something EVERY character needs. You can never have enough hit points.

As a side note, a Cloak of Minor Displacement is wondrous. It gives concealment at all times which could randomly save your life if someone is trying to target you with a horrible Disintegrate ray or something equally frightening. Also, no sneak attacks while you have concealment.

Good luck surviving! :)

My GM let slip that there are going to be some situations coming up in which there is a chance for instant death.

does anyone know what those might be and then possible defenses against them. Especially for a mage, spells, items, etc.?

What level is your party?

Death Ward

We are 11th level

How do put the Death ward ability on something, I cannot find it?

The Death Ward armor upgrade is on p. 142 of the Complete Arcane.

Once per day, someone wearing armor enhanced by this special ability who is struck with a death effect (death spells, magical death effects, energy drain, and any negative energy effects such as those from inflict spells or chill touch) can ignore the effect.

Craft Magic Arms and Armor. +1 bonus.

Amulet of Fortune Prevailing from the MiniHB lets you reroll a save once per day, for a bare 8000gp. Lets you get away with a nat 1 long as it doesn't happen often.

I'm reminded of an old Dragon article "The best suit of armor a mage can have is a very highly enchanted one placed on the character in front of him."

And the old "I don't have to run faster than the bear only faster than you."

Of course, the death could be the one caused by the slow, painful buildup of paranoia that leads to a sudden heart attack or stroke. All caused by the flippant, possibly untrue, comment delivered by that most untrustworthy creature: your DM!
