D&D 4E Instead of D&D 4E, what about d20 Fantasy?

I pose this question with the pending release of d20 Modern, which is considered a generic rules set for modern day settings, why don't they just redo, or revise, D&D 3e into d20 Fantasy, and just consider the rules as a generic ruleset for fantasy?

In which case, D&D is already a generic ruleset.

Pretty much. Its definitely what you make it. There are some flavor archetypes that are uniquely D&D, but they can be easily discarded if another fantasy motif is desired. I would be curious as to what the original poster would expect from d20 Fantasy. The whole point of the OGL is to use the d20 system from vanilla D&D to create divergent settings.

Well, the "D&D"name is unlikely to go away. That brand name is the most valuable thing that the RPG dept. at WotC own - in RPG terms, it's worth a fortune. In fact, the brand names are pretty much *all* they own - at least, all that matters.

The D&D name, as Hasbro discovered recently, has a 90% brand awareness in the continental US. That's incredible; it's also the reason why D&D sells.
