INT-Increase and Skillpoints

Horrendos

First Post
For Example: I have a Human-Fighter LVL 3 with INT 9 (-1) and i increase my INT at lvl 4 with the increase-point on 10(0).

Do i get 3 bonus skillpoints from the lvl 1-3 or does this only count for the actual lvl and further lvl-ups?

Same question with CON.

thx

CON is retroactive... INT isn't.

When you level up to 4, you choose your stat adjustment before skills, so you get the additional skill point at that level, but unlike con, points are gained retroactivly.

IMC I houseruled it so they both work retroactively. It makes it a little more worthwhile to raise INT, and prevents you having to remember what level you raised your INT at when writing baddies.

By rules as written, it's not, though.

Hmm. What happens if you lose Int?

No reason why a negative adjustment should be retroactive when a positive adjustment isn't.

Speculation: you can't "unlearn" skills. But if your INT is lower, your total skill bonus will be lower for INT based skills...

EDIT: Err, I agree with what I presume you are questioning Gort about... :p

Neither an Int increase or an Int decrease would affect your skill ranks in anyway. Note that you don't have skill points, you have skill ranks. The only time you have skill points is when you are leveling up, and you have to exchange them into skill ranks immediatly.

A change in Con would (obviously) effect the number of you current hit points. But note that you have 1 hp for every HD, regardless of how low your Con is and how low you roll for hp.

IMC we take a "flowers for algernon" approach and say that Int increases are retroactive as well. If they lose the bonus they do in fact "unlearn" skills. The player would get to choose unless there was some plotline reason why the DM wanted to choose. It has worked well for us and makes sense IMHO.
