Interchanging melee

If a character w/ multiple attacks (say at 16/11/6), could he attack w/ a weapon in hand and unarmed interchangably?

For example

Sword at +16
Unarmed at +11
Sword at +6

He could do the first two attacks (sword +16 and unarmed +11) if he dropped the sword as a free action, but the second sword attack would not be possible since picking up the sword would be a move-equivalent action.

You can make an unarmed strike with your off hand, but you use the two-weapon fighting rules to do so. You'd have to declare that you were using "TWF mode" before your first attack, because it applies penalties to attacks with the sword as well. (If you try it, note that an unarmed strike is always considered a light weapon.)

A lot depends on whether or not this character is a monk whose whole body is assumed to be used in unarmed attacks. If that is the case, I see no problem with it.

If instead this character is using punching as his or her unarmed attack, then off hand penalties (-4 from using a weapon in an offhand) come into play, even if you are simply aternating iterative attacks.

Even a monk will incur TWF penalties for making an unarmed strike. From a rules standpoint, fighting with kukri/fist or kukri/headbutt is the same as fighting with kukri/kama, which is the same as fighting with longsword/dagger, or any other two-weapon style.

I'd allow it, without penalty.

I don't see it breaking the game.

I can see someone hacking at you with a sword and then punching someone in the face, sword still in hand.

I can see someone wielding a greatsword and kicking someone in the groin.

I don't think allowing it is abusing the rules, but that's just me.

Well.... unless he's using a special monk weapon.

"A monk fighting with a one-handed weapon can make an unarmed strike as an off-hand attack, but she suffers the standard penalties for two-weapon fighting. Likewise, a monk with a weapon (other than a special monk weapon) in her off hand gets an extra attack with that weapon but suffers the usual penalties for two-weapon fighting and can't strike with a flurry of blows."

Ah, of course. I stand corrected. A monk with a monk weapon is a special case, and can freely exchange unarmed strikes with weapon attacks.
