so, I haven't been RPing lately, and have come across an interesting question that I'm curious on what the best gaming community has to say about it...

3.5, Soulknife...

does the psyblade that soulknives use leave any marks as it's a psychic power?

Ask your DM:

1) if he likes consistency, and a spell like Spiritual Hammer (aka Spiritual Weapon) leaves a mark in his campaign, so should a PsyPlade. If Spiritual Hammer doesn't, neither should a PsyBlade.

2) if he doesn't make psionics follow similar rules to magic, then it may or may not follow the same rules as summoned weapons.

to take the question in another direction...

i know about the freedoms of writing, but was thinking of writing a story with a soulknife as well, but i wanted to try and keep it as real as possible... i've read several D&D novels, and have a lot of ideas as far as the description of spell effects and all, but how do you think i should proceed with if it leaves a mark or not? The soulknife in my story is an assassin if that helps at all...

it's not the same character as the one i plan on playing, but i think a soulknife assassin makes for an intresting character in a story

It might be a more interesting story if it DIDN'T leave a mark, makes people think he was poisoned or something so the blame is shifted from the Assassin

for OP I would say Yes it leaves a mark, simply because regardless of what people say about HPs I still visualise them as damage so if it damages then it leaves a mark, whether that mark is a cut or a bruise and what shape it takes and things like that depend on the style of the blade IIRC the Mind Blade can be changed into weapon that deals different types of damage so Slashing weapons cut the skin or leave long thin bruises but Blunt (I can never remember how to spell the word D&D uses) weapons leave a big bruise. However I would say that both of [MENTION=19675]Dannyalcatraz[/MENTION]'s posts are true (I would play a Soulknife as well... )

that's my thoughts, but i do want to try... keyword there is try to keep the writing as close to mechanics as possible, that's why i've been trying to find out if the psyblade leaves a mark or not.... me, and my gaming group of friends have always used the psionics is different from magic rule, but we are at a loss at it I could see it eiter way, but no description in the books actually state if there's any tell tale sign of being struck by a psyblade or not, as it's technically not physical, it's psionic energy... I kind of see it similar to Psylocke from the X-Men, but I could be wrong in my thinking on the mechanics behind the psyblade

I think if anything this thread would seem to indicate that mechanically no-one knows and few people have a strong opinion either way (except [MENTION=85158]Dandu[/MENTION] who straight decides "Yes" with no real explanation or evidence). I play with the Psionics as Different rules because they are different, if they weren't then what's the point in having psionics...

but I think you could go either way and still be mechanically "correct"

Here's another take on it: if it didn't leave a mark, it wouldn't have a "weapon type"- slashing, piercing, or bludgeoning- based on its form.
