A Kickstarter based on the popular superhero IP Invincible will launch on Kickstarter on September 23rd. Free League Publishing updated the description of their Kickstarter pre-launch page to confirm the news earlier today. The game will use the Year Zero Engine, similar to other IP-driven Free League games such as the Alien RPG. The RPG is desgined by designed by Adam Bradford and Tomas Harenstam.

The Kickstarter will include both a standard and collector's edition version of the Core Rulebook along with a new Starter Set. One stretch goal is a limited edition reprint of Invincible #1 that will only be distributed to backers and never reprinted ever again.

Invincible was originally created by Robert Kirkman, Cory Walker, and Ryan Ottley as an Image comic book series. The series was more recently adopted into a Prime Video animated series. Several board games and comic spinoffs featuring side-characters have also been released based on Invincible.

Can anyone explain the gist of the Year Zero Engine game mechanics? Is it more traditional like D&D or GURPS or something fundamentally different?
The biggest difference in practice when compared to something like D&D is that there are no DCs or target numbers. As long as you roll at least one 6, you succeed. Additional 6s can do more, depending on what you roll. In combat when attacking, you deal more damage.

To vary difficulty, the GM gives penalties or bonuses to the roll. If something is very very difficult but still possible, you'd give a -3 penalty. You don't roll if something is impossible.

The Invincible TV series might actually be more violent than The Boys, although it's pretty close.
I keep meaning to watch that series. I love the comics -- might be my favorite non-DC comic series after Astro-City -- but because of that I kind of shy away from the adaptation. Unlike the Boys, where I hated the comic but really love the show.

I never read the comics, but I have a lot of friends who are hardcore comics fans and they all seem to think the TV show polishes and improves the comic book series quite a bit.

At this point I still think my favorite iteration of this story ("Superman but as a bad guy") is in the Irredeemable comic series. But as far as on film, I think Invincible's show is more nuanced than The Boys or any other variation on the theme. I like The Boys quite a bit but it is pretty unapologetically one-note by design. I have not read the Invincible comics, though, so I can't compare that.

Mark Waid is easily my favorite writer and Irredeemable is indeed a great take on "evil Superman." I actually think the Injustice comics are another good take and maybe DC's best take.
