Invisibility -- In-Game Explanation for No Attacking?

I would say its something like this:

The invisibility spell doesn't actually make you invisible. It does, however, decieve the senses olf those around you so they think you are not there.

However, When you stab that sword right into the other guy's eye, I would say its a pretty good indication that you are there. It is impossible to decieve someone who you have just attacked into thinking you're not there.

This sort of explanation seems to fit more a sneak attack made by a rogue in hiding. Once you attack, your cover's blown and they know you're there.

Invisibility is a spell for a reason, and it's more effective than a rogue's ability to hide in shadows because it's magic.

I know I'm being repetitive... :D ;)

There's no way that the spell works by making you believe I'm not here so that when I attack you become sure I'm there, thus breaking the illusion. Because

1) everyone sees me, not just the one I attacked.
2) if I shout in your ear "I'M HEREEEEEE!!!" jumping up and down and waving a flag (which I've picked up after becoming invisible, so the flag can be seen)... I'm still invisible.

The little spirit explanation is somewhat more working, even if I don't see how a spirit would react at each and every casting of the spell in exactly the same way.

For me, magic is magic and that's it. The gods decided the power of the spell for exactly the same reasons that WotC did - a 2nd level spell can't be too powerful.

The other funny thing about this spell is:

How can an invisible person (not the caster) end being invisible? He has to attack someone. What if he wants to be visible???

One letter...D

See the D in brackets at the end of the duration time? It means it´s dismissible at will as a Standard Action that provokes no AoO from anyone. See Chapter 10: Magic in the PHb ;)

So if you´re not the caster, and want to be visible again..yo9u walk over to the caster and tell him to dismiss the spell :)

Unfortunately that's not always possible.
Especially if the caster is not your friend. Imagine you are invited to the king and on your way a wizard who does not like you cast invisibility on you. Or even better: someone - you don't know who - casts invisibility on you. Of course you cannot dare to enter the king's room invisible. A nasty situation...

Come on...

..that´s easy...you simply elbow someone on purpose (an attack with subdual damage) in the crowd that forms at the entrance to the king´s castle and apologize profusely after the spell broke ;)

And, by the way..the range to make others invisible is "Touch", so...you should know who that guy was who chanted for 6 seconds and then touched you..and then you turned invisible  If you don´t know him...sock him one. Two birds with one stone ;) the guy won´t do it again, and you´re visible again :D

Well, imagine you are just standing up in the king's waiting chamber and the doors to his throne room are being opened. Suddenly you turn invisible. Well... elbow one of the king's guards, in front of the king's eyes? Or the king himself?
Well, you would get a saving throw at least. But if you fail...

Actually: What about attacking yourself? It certainly is an attack.
