I think it's a good idea, but probably a little underpowered.

Consider the Dark Blue Rhomboid Ioun Stone (which provides Alertness), at a cost of 8000gp. Regardless of the relative worth of Alertness and Toughness, it's inconsistent for Ioun Stones with the same effect (grants a feat) to be different prices.

Then we've got the Pink Rhomboid, which provides a +2 Constitution bonus. Now, of course, this isn't the same thing as Toughness - you can be wearing a +Con item and have the Ioun Stone for more - but it's generally more useful.

I think your Ioun Stone should cost no more than 8000gp. For consistency, it should share the same prerequisites and statistics as other Ioun Stones (12th caster level, 12th level to create).

IMC, I'd ad hoc adjust the price down to 6000gp.

As an aside, Anubis's "proper" Toughness feats don't seem to be canon. They may be a good idea, but they're not official. Clearly, in Anubis's campaign, this Ioun Stone would provide +5HP when in use, though for ease of presentation, the item shouldn't propose a "fix" to other sections of the rules.

I never said that fix was official, I said it was proper. This was decided after a lot of study of feat comparisons and playtesting. I hope there was no confusion, as that was not my intention. Proper, not official.

The price should be 8000, same as the other Ioun Stone that gives a feat.

Why don't you have it scale to the characters fortitude save. If they possess the adequate base fortitude save for the next step up toughness feat, it functions as that one.

Ioun Stone of Toughness
Fort Save - Bonus Hp's
+0 - +4 ----- +3 HP
+5 - +7 ----- +6 HP
+8 - +10 ---- +9 HP
+11 --> ----- +12 HP
Cost: 8000gp

So, instead it scales with the characters already set Fortitude. Just thought it'd be an interesting idea.

toughness

toughness has been house ruled in my game and grants a flat +1 per level and can only be taken once. that said I plan to use the Ioun Stone idea in my game.

More toughness variants...

I use the standard numbers for the toughness feats (3 for the base feat), but I extend not only the Death's Door, but Disabled range as well.

Thus, a character with toughness becomes disabled at 0 hp, but does not fall unconscious until -3 hp. A character with toughness is considered dying at -4 hp to -12 hp; at -13 hp he becomes dead.

This makes the feat more useful to PCs, considerably more useful to monsters with Fast Healing, and no different whatsoever to undead.
