[IronDM] Fall 2004 - Contest Underway

Sign Up Begins Tuesday, Nov. 9 at 12:30 EST

It looks like we have enough interest, so sign up will begin Tuesday, Nov. 9 at 12:30 EST in this thread over at the Rat Bastard Club boards:

http://www.aquerra.com/rbdmc/viewtopic.php?t=134

I'd encourage those of you that don't currently have accounts there who wish to participate to register now, so that you can pop in and sign up without delay.

I'll take the first 7 people who register after 12:30 (by the clock on those boards), and Zappo gets a reserved spot, since he wasn't able to defend his title in the last tournament.

I'll also take the 8th through 10th person to sign up as alternates. You never know when someone will drop out and an alternate will need to step in.

Good luck all!

Thanks for the spot. :) I was really sorry for the accident last time. It's good getting another chance at the title. ;)

Garrr...

That's right after my first round of Ceramic DM... Has anyone survived entering both?
I have :). I managed to make it to the semi-finals of Ceramic DM at the same time I won the Iron DM tournament.

However, unless you have a *lot* of creative energy to spare, it can be very draining. I'd love for anyone who wants to participate to do so, but my recommendation would be to focus on one at a time.

I think you already have 8 or 9, but go ahead and sign me up as an alternate please.
Actual sign up doesn't occur 'till Tuesday at 12:30 EST, so, if you're quick on the draw, you may still get a spot.

Good luck to all who will be vying for the 7 open spots :)

That brings me to a rather large question -- is this going to be an orignal format EN World Iron DM contest, or a RBDM styled competition. I realize that rat-bastardliness can help in an Iron DM entry, but the two formats are fairly divergent.

I'm aiming for the kind of contest that you would normally find on EN World. The main reason that I'm running the contest on the RBDMC forums is that EN World has been pretty slow for me lately.

Just out of curiosity, what kind of differences do you see between a normal entry and a rat-bastard-type entry?

Once upon a time I entered the RB Iron DM tourney...and did quite poorly :(. My lackluster performance was due in part to my exceedingly longwinded entry, and in part to the contest being a bit different than your standard Iron DM contest. The differences as I recall them are:

1) The competition I was in had entries which built on details, locations, characters and monsters used in previous entries. All of the adventures were being blended into one large ongoing story arc, all based in the same locale.

2) Strong use of the theme ingredients was not good enough to earn you a victory -- you had to have RB plot twists and devious encounters designed to torment the PCs/players.

There may have been other differences, but time has begun causing my memory to fade. It's probably just a defense mechanism to help shelter my wounded ego :p.

The things that I'm going to be looking for in determining the winner are going to be the creative integration of ingrediants and the playability of the scenario. There are lots of different ways to achieve both of those, and they'll both be weighed about equally.

There will be word limits for each round. You won't be disqualified for going over, but it sticking to them will help to focus the entry.
